New Heart
Reading: Ezekiel 36:22-36
Key Verse: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” v.26
What is it that God does that is new? He does not simply give us a set of new commandments; He puts within us a set of new attitudes. Prior to God’s intervention, our hearts were self centred, calloused towards the needs of our neighbours and determined to be independent of God. On December 3, 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first successful heart transplant when 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky received a new human heart at Groote Schuur Hospital in South Africa. He had been an active sportsman but his own heart had become diseased and no longer functioned as it should.
Similarly, God has removed our cold spiritual hearts of stone and transplanted within us the attitudes of the heart of Jesus who lived to do the Father’s will by comforting the hurting, embracing the lonely and helping those in need. We used to live in the hard-hearted disease of selfish sin which caused us to no longer function according to God’s original design. Now we have a new soft heart overflowing with God’s own divine love, a genuine desire to please Him and an authentic, active concern for others.
Prayer: Lord, may I live according to my new soft heart and not my old stony heart
