The Blessing of Unity

Reading: Psalm 133:1-3

Key Verse: “How truly wonderful and delightful to see brothers and sisters living together in sweet unity! ... For from this realm of sweet harmony God will release his eternal blessing, the promise of life forever! v.1,3 (Passion Translation)

This issue of unity of heart and soul is so important that today we focus on another example of its effect from the psalms. In particular let us concentrate on the word harmony which could be defined as, “the combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce a pleasing effect”. Think of an orchestra or pop group. They are each individuals but combine their efforts to produce music which stirs the soul of millions. This effect could never be achieved by one person alone or even everyone playing one after the other. Harmony is only achieved by combining their abilities at the same time with no individual dominating any other.

So our aim in church life is to be in unity and work harmoniously with others. Note what happens when we do. God will release His blessing of eternal life! Many will come to know and experience His salvation! People may still be saved in a church where there is division, but it will not be a church where God is really “at home” and therefore converts could be limited. The newly formed church in Jerusalem was noted for its unity and togetherness which enabled the Lord to “add to the church daily!”
