Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 203 OF 366

Be Encouraged Together

Reading: Rom.1:8-12

Key Verse: “I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me” v.12 NKJV

Today’s key verse is another of the “together” passages in the NT. It explains and emphasises the importance of what happens when we meet and spend time together. Paul observes that he shares a mutual faith with the Roman Christians. His faith may be greater than theirs but even their “smaller” faith would be more than sufficient to encourage him despite his deeper revelations and special calling of God.

This shows us one of the reasons we need to meet together regularly.  Even though I have little faith compared to you I can encourage you and vice versa.  It is a mutually shared faith that fans to flame when exposed to other believers.  One illustration preachers often used is of an old fashioned coal fire.  If one live coal falls off the pile onto the hearth it will eventually go out. But if it is placed back on the pile of burning coals it will flame again.

A word often used nowadays is “community” but sometimes those communities are internet on line or so diverse that people within the community do not really know each other. The church should be a place of tactile relationships where our coals of faith burn together.
