Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 196 OF 366

They devoted themselves together

Reading: Acts 2:42-47

Key Verse: “They devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” v.42

Over time any group can lose its unique distinctiveness resulting in a drift towards formalism and institutionalism. It can therefore be beneficial to look back to its origins to re-invigorate itself and pioneer again. Today’s reference is not of the early church, it is the early days of this church. Perhaps what were priorities for them should be priorities for us also.

Firstly we see the church members were devoted which in the original Greek meant that they were passionately earnest and constantly diligent to continue with four main activities. They hungered after teaching about Jesus, they longed for close relationships with one another, they remembered Jesus as they shared together in common meals and they fervently prayed together. In later verses we see they resolved each other’s needs and met regularly for genuinely thankful and expressive worship.

Two key words and phrases of the early church are “together” and “one another”. Here the believers were continually meeting together for teaching, friendship, communion, prayer, meals and worship. What was the result? The Lord added to the church daily!

But note this increase was preceded by the believers determined passion to devote themselves to the activities of the called out together ones!

Prayer: Lord I devote myself to participate in the activities of my church
