This verse is used as a benediction to close many Christian meetings. It sums up in one word an individual key characteristic of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The one word to describe the Father is love. The one word to describe the Son is grace and the one word to describe the Holy Spirit is fellowship. The Holy Spirit is not identified by words such as power, gifts, fruit or even tongues but the word fellowship.  This is His chief characteristic and the Amplified Bible extends our understanding of that one word to include concepts of a union, partnership, companionship, friendship and intimate relationship. In Greek this word koinonia could even be used to describe the shared relationship of a man and wife in marriage.

Jesus promised that we would not be alone but He would send the Comforter to be our companion to befriend and be with us on our life’s journey. Teaching about the Holy Spirit is not meant to merely provide doctrine so we understand the creed, “I believe in the Holy Spirit”. The goal is that the doctrine may become a personal daily dynamic in our lives. Belief must become experience. There’s always more!
