What does it say?

God gave Ezekiel two signs and two messages regarding the rebellious house of Israel. The words spoken by the Sovereign Lord would happen without delay.

What does it mean?

Generations of Israelites had been warned to obey the Lord or suffer discipline at His hand, but they continually rebelled. This group of captives still hoped that Jerusalem would be saved, but the signs Ezekiel acted out made God’s intentions for Jerusalem and her king clear. Because the Lord had mercifully given His people so long to repent, most doubted punishment would happen. Even those who believed the prophets didn’t think judgment would come in their lifetime. God would delay no longer; this generation would see the Word of the Lord come to pass before their eyes.

How should I respond?

Jesus promised His disciples that He would come again. Two thousand years later, His followers still anticipate His return. Human nature, however, causes us to doubt anything we haven’t seen or experienced. Scripture tells us that God’s delay is prompted by His mercy (2 Peter 3:9). Has His delayed return prompted you to be diligent in telling friends and family about His mercy, or have you become complacent? Only you can decide how to spend the time you have. Determine to live today in light of His imminent return.

A New Heart: A Study in Ezekiel

An exile himself, Ezekiel prophesied to a people whose blindness and hard-heartedness had caused their own destruction. As the Lord’s glory leaves the temple (Ezekiel 10:1-3), we are reminded of the tragic consequences of Israel’s disobedience. Israel’s story, however, will not end in exile and judgment. Ezekiel prophesies of the day when God will cleanse his people of their sin, give them a new heart, and fill them with His Spirit (Ezekiel 36:25-27).
