Planting Tiny Seeds

Key Verse : Matthew 13:31-32

“He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches .”

One mustard seed is 1-2 millimeters in size. That tiny mustard seed can grow into a plant that, in ideal conditions, reaches 30 feet tall. Its mature size can be home to many birds while providing plenty of shelter and shade for others.

Jesus used agricultural parables because the people he taught were workers. They were fishermen, farmers, fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters. They had small children and large families. They understood what he was saying because he appealed to their lifestyle. His parables have also withstood the years since. They are simple enough for children to understand but also complex enough to keep humans studying them for lifetimes.

God’s kingdom started small. But His kingdom will be large enough to be a shelter for all who need it. What a gift that is!

As a human being, I think we all like instant gratification. Amazon is trying to capitalize on this desire in us. The disciples didn’t know when any of Jesus’ teachings would be complete, and of course, they believed he was going to overthrow Rome and liberate Israel then. Unfortunately for them, that wasn’t the case. Jesus instructs them to sow their seeds. One day the seeds would flourish and the harvest would be plenty.

What little seeds are you planting? Mentoring someone, parenting, praying daily for someone’s salvation. All of these are tiny mustard seeds. Will we ever see the fruits of our labor? Maybe not. Probably not. At least this side of heaven. But one day, the kingdom will be fully complete, perfect, and a shelter for all those that love God.

Plant the seeds. Take the tiny steps of obedience. Walk in faith and obedience. It’s all going to work out for His glory.
