Social Injustice
Key Verse : Nehemiah 5:3-6
“ Others were saying, ‘We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.’ Still others were saying, ‘We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards. We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.’ I became extremely angry when I heard their outcry and these complaints .”
Nehemiah 5 begins with the widespread outcries from families against Jewish countrymen. These men were seizing the opportunity to make money off the misfortunes of marginalized people. Some of their daughters were enslaved and the people felt powerless. Upon hearing this information, Nehemiah became extremely angry. Can you relate? There are many things we hear on the news that may cause us to become angry. Yet, our anger should not be where this ends. Nehemiah heard the outcries and complaints and decided to take a stand for integrity and righteousness.
“…What you are doing isn’t right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God and not invite the reproach of our foreign enemies? Even I, as well as my brothers and servants, have been leading them money and grain. Please let us stop charging interest.” Nehemiah 5:9-10
It must have taken such boldness to speak out in the midst of such great opposition. But may I submit to you that Nehemiah did not do this in his own strength? Before taking on the task of rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem he prayed and fasted before God (Nehemiah 1:4). Nehemiah knew that he could not make a difference without God stepping in.
Today, Christ has given us power through the Holy Spirit who allows us to be witnesses on His behalf (Acts 1:8). As we walk as witnesses on behalf of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is with us giving us the boldness we need. It is by His spirit that we are able to receive strategy when speaking up on behalf of the marginalized and standing against injustice. There are a lot of social injustices in our world that may prick your heart today. As we think about them, may we also be encouraged by the actions of Nehemiah whose compassion led him to action. Those actions included praying, fasting, seeking counsel, sharing with other leaders, working with others, and speaking out on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves.
