But Even If

Key Verse : Daniel 3:18

During the most challenging years of my life—filled with cross-country moves, severed jobs, a child lost, accumulating debt—one thing has remained certain for me: God is good. Even if nothing works out as hoped and my life doesn’t go as planned, I serve a Creator who is inherently good and can never be anything but good.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew this to be true, even when faced with death. They were Jews exiled to Babylon and living in a world of corruption. And yet, faced with compromises at every turn, they held firm to their faith in an Almighty God. This faith was put to the test in Daniel 3 when King Nebuchadnezzar called for the nation to bow down to a gold idol.

The nation was gathered and the call was made to bow; however, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to do so. They were brought before the crowd and threatened to be thrown into a fiery furnace so hot that merely getting close was a death warrant.

They refused to bow, but instead, said,

“But even if he does not rescue us, we want you as king to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.”

These three men were so sure of our God that they proclaimed His goodness in front of a whole nation. They testified that God could save them, but even if He didn’t in His sovereignty, they would still hold fast to Him.

If you haven’t heard this incredible tale, long story short, the three men were thrown in but not burned. Christ was seen walking in the furnace with the men, and they were saved by His protection from the flames.

As a result of their faith and deliverance, God was glorified in their fiery trial! The end of chapter three records the king praising the Lord and pointing a whole nation towards the one true God.

Friend, let me ask you: do you believe God is good even when things don’t work out? Even when that prayer goes unanswered? That need goes unmet?

God is looking for the kind of faith that declares BUT EVEN IF in the face of adversity and trials. And it’s that kind of faith that will point others to the saving power of Christ!
