Walking in Repentance

Key Verse : Ezekiel 18:30

We’re working our way through the book of Ezekiel, and I’m proud of you for pressing on! This book can sometimes be confusing to read, but I encourage you not to give up. As you continue reading and asking the Holy Spirit to help you understand, He will (Psalm 119:130). Our minds are renewed by the Word of God (Romans 12:2), and not just the easy-to-understand parts…all of it (2 Timothy 3:16).

In his book, Ezekiel prophesies God’s judgment on Israel. The first 32 (yes…32!) chapters are filled mostly with gloom and doom. If you’re anything like me, it’s tempting to skim through and read it without really relating to the text. “Those are the BIG sins. Those people were straight up rebellious. They completely ignored God’s instruction. They deserve that kind of judgment.” (Just me?)

Well, the truth is, we’re more like the Israelites than we like to admit on most days. Because we’re human, we have the same sinful nature they do, and it was just as much our sin as it was theirs that put Jesus on the cross.

Praise God for sending His son to free us from the penalty of sin! Until His second coming, we are being released from the power of sin, but it is still present in our lives. One thing I love about God is that He always makes a way out. He is the God of second chances.

“This is the declaration of the Lord God. ‘Repent and turn from all your rebellious acts, so they will not become a sinful stumbling block to you. ’” Ezekiel 18:30

Every single day, we fail. But every single day, we have this option: repent and turn.

We can approach the throne boldly (Hebrews 4:16) and receive forgiveness for our sins. But it doesn’t just stop there. God gives us the opportunity and the power to turn. To make a better choice. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can put off our old ways and put on the attitude of Christ (Colossians 3; Philippians 2:5).

While the Israelites were wandering in spiritual darkness and facing God’s judgment and wrath, sin never had the final word. The same is true in our lives today. Thanks be to God whose love is abounding, we can repent and turn.
