Wondered by the Word — the Bible in a Yearគំរូ

All Power is His
Key Verse : Nahum 1:2-8
“T he LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness .”
It’s common to hear people speak about the characteristics of God that we like. Not many of us are walking around, sharing about the wrath of God. What about His vengeance? It should be a comfort to Christians to know all of God’s characteristics. To see the qualities that make God the almighty God that He is.
Throughout Scripture, we’re promised trials. We’ve read the stories of the broken world, like Cain and Abel and the people before the flood. We can look out into our world today and see brokenness. Along with the broken people we see, we can witness hatred for light, goodness, and God. We can rest in the promises that God is just and will avenge His people through all of what we know and witness. His wrath will be poured out on the enemies of His Kingdom.
But God isn’t only a judge and punisher. Through all of our trials, He is our good. He’s the stronghold steadfast rock. We can find shelter in the King.
Nahum 1:7 sticks out in the chapter of verses surrounding it. After describing punishment, there’s this bright light. There’s the truth that yes, God will punish those who He needs to punish, but we can find shelter in His steadfast ways.
May we each find peace knowing that God is a God of infinite power, might, and characteristics. His attributes are unimaginable to our humanness. How sweet it is to know that we are secure and vengeance is His.
