Evaluating Your Idols

Key Verse : Jonah 2:8

My daughter has a stuffed, brown teddy bear given to her when she was just two or three years old, and she sleeps with it every night. Over the months and years, she has chosen a few other “stuffies” to sleep with her, but the teddy bear always sleeps closest to her. Many mornings, when she wakes up and walks into the living room, she’s carrying the bear with her.

We hold close the things we cherish.

Throughout the day, whether we realize it or not, we’re cherishing something. It’s the thing we think about as soon as we wake up. It’s the thing we turn to when we’re stressed, tired, or bored. It’s the thing that gets the most of our attention. It’s the thing we guard from others (maybe even unintentionally) because it would be devastating to be without it.

I guard my iced vanilla latte with my life every morning. My littlest one will sneak a sip if I’m not paying attention. I can’t afford to lose a single sip of that caffeinated goodness! It’s safe to say…I cherish my coffee. (Amen?)

On a serious note, this verse from Jonah’s story is a reminder to evaluate what we cherish. When Jonah fled to a boat and a horrific storm threatened the lives of all the men on the boat, they all began to cry out to their gods. But it was all in vain. Their gods weren’t the Living God. Their gods weren’t powerful enough to command the seas with their voices.

How often do we run to worthless idols throughout our day? How often do we check what Facebook says instead of what the unchanging Word of God says? How often do we rely on coffee to strengthen us for the day instead of Christ? How often do we vent to our best friend before we cry out to God for wisdom?

What are you holding closely? Use today to evaluate any “worthless idols.” Take note of what you’re holding closely or what you resort to a challenging moment. May we turn our eyes to our Heavenly Father and His Word.

Psalm 119:117,

“ Turn my eyes from looking at what is worthless; give me life in your ways .”
