The Path to Sin

Key Verse : 2 Samuel 11:2-4

King David was a man after God’s own heart and there seemed little he could do wrong. The man was practically a saint, even towards Saul all the while Saul was trying to kill him.

Then we come to 2 Samuel 11 and see a disheartening and tragic fall for David. And if David can fall, so can we. Which is why it’s important to study his trajectory to perhaps avoid our own falls.

It all begins in a place David shouldn’t have been in the first place—his palace roof. The reason why he shouldn’t have been there was because his people were at war and it was customary for the king to be in battle with his men. David had often been in battle before but for some reason he stayed home.

This brings us to the first note—stay away from places you shouldn’t. Perhaps that’s a bar if you’ve struggled with alcohol in the past, or an old friend who has a tendency to pull you into questionable activities. If the Holy Spirit nudges you out of a questionable place in life, get out of there before it’s too late.

Beyond being in the wrong place, David takes three steps that are progressively worse. It is by this same journey we move from temptation to sin.

1. Thought. In verse 2, while on the roof, David saw Bathseba from afar. She was bathing and while David should have stopped that thought train immediately and walked away, he dwelled on what he saw. It was here, in his thoughts, an idea took root that would cause so much destruction.
2. Word. In the next verse, David tells someone to go get Bathsheba. He did take his thought captive but instead fed the idea and it progressed into a word.
3. Deed. In an unfortunate culmination, David slept with another man’s wife and committed adultery. Then, in an attempt to hide the fact he got Bathsheba pregnant, he had her husband sent to the frontlines in battle so he would be killed.

This is the natural progression into sin, and it’s important you’re able to identify it so you can yourself remain distant from sin in your own life. It’s certainly best to stay away from the wrong place to begin with, but if you find yourself in a precarious situation, please stop at a thought, before you end up in deed. The consequences of sin are devastating and my prayer for you is to stay as far away from sin as possible so you might live a flourishing life.
