Christian liberty anent meats and drinks: its wideness and its straitness.
1Noo, anent eidol‐sacrifeeces: “We ken that we aʼ hae knowledge.” Knowledge swalls up, but love up‐biggs.
2Gif ony man thinks he kens a thing, he hasna yet gotten to ken onything as he soud ken.
3But, gif ony man loeʼs God, the same man is appruvʼt oʼ God.
4Anent eidol‐sacrifeeces:— we ken weel that an eidol is naething iʼ the warld, and that thar is nae God but ane.
5For eʼen gin thar be sae‐caʼd gods, gin they be in heeven or yirth — eʼen as thar are “gods” mony and “lords” mony;
6But to us thar is ae God, the Faither, by wham are aʼ things, and we for him; and ae Lord Jesus Christ throwe wham are aʼ things, and we throwe him.
7Hoobeit, that lear is no in aʼ; but some, trokin #8:7 Paul kent than an eidol was naething (v. 4.); but a wheen brethren, thoʼ they worshippʼt only God, believed in the existence oʼ eidols, as enemies oʼ God. Siccan a ane coudna eat in an eidolʼs temple, be the meat ever so gude oʼ itsel: he wad feel he was trokin wiʼ the eidol. We can hae some airtin here, for oorsels.wiʼ the eidol, eʼen till noo, wiʼ the eidol as a sacrifeece, eat; and their conscience, bein unco waff, is defiled.
8But meat will‐na gar us win ben to God; naither, gin aiblins we eat‐na, div we faʼ short; nor aiblins gin we eat, div we excel.
9But tak ye tent, that by nae means this freedom is made a stumbling clog for the weak.
10For gin aiblins ane soud see you, wha has knowledge, sittin in an eidolʼs temple, at meat, wull‐na his weak conscience be made bauld to eat the eidol‐sacrifeeces?
11Sae, than, the weak ane — the brither Christ deeʼt for — is brocht to ruin by yere knowledge!
12But in sae sinnin again the brethren, and clouring their conscience whilk is weak, ye are sinnin again Christ!
13Sae, in ony case ava, whaur meat is a snare to my brither, Iʼse in naewise eat flesh for evermair, that I mak‐na my brither to stoiter.
