Revelation 4

Vision of the Heavenly Throne

1 After these things I looked, and there before me stood an open door in heaven. The first voice I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come here, and I will reveal to you what must happen after these present events.”

2 Instantly I was in the Spirit, and there before me stood a throne in heaven with Someone seated on the throne.

3 The One sitting there had an appearance resembling jasper and carnelian stones, and encircling the throne was a rainbow with an appearance like emerald.

4 Surrounding that throne were twenty-four additional thrones, and seated on those thrones were twenty-four elders dressed in white garments with golden crowns on their heads.

5 From the throne emanated lightning flashes, rumblings, and peals of thunder. Seven blazing lamps were burning before the throne, which represent the seven Spirits of God.

6 Extending before the throne was something resembling a sea of glass, transparent as crystal.

At the very center and surrounding the throne, were four living beings, covered with eyes both in front and behind.

7 The first living being resembled a lion, the second living being resembled an ox, the third living being possessed a face like a man, and the fourth living being resembled an eagle in flight.

8 Each of the four living beings had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and underneath. Day and night they never cease declaring,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,

who existed in the past, who exists now, and who will come in the future.”

9 Whenever the living beings ascribe glory, honor, and thanksgiving to the One seated on the throne—the One who lives throughout all the ages,

10 the twenty-four elders prostrate themselves before the One seated on the throne and worship the One who lives throughout all the ages. They cast their crowns before the throne and declare,

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,

to receive glory and honor and power,

for You created all things,

and because of Your will they existed and were brought into being.”
