Philippians 2

Spiritual Unity

1 Therefore, if there exists any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation flowing from love, if any fellowship created by the Spirit, if any tender compassion and mercy,

2 complete my joy by maintaining the same mindset, possessing the same love, being united in spirit and purpose.

3 Do nothing motivated by selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as more important than yourselves.

4 Each person should be concerned not only with personal interests but also with the interests of others.

The Paradigm of Christ

5 Adopt the same attitude that was present in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though He existed in the very form of God, did not regard His equality with God as something to exploit for His own advantage,

7 but instead emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

8 And having been recognized in His manner as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.

9 For this reason God also highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that stands above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend—in heaven and on earth and beneath the earth—

11 and every tongue should openly declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Working out of Salvation

12 Therefore, my dear ones, just as you have consistently obeyed, not only during my presence but even more so now during my absence, continue working out your salvation with reverence and trembling.

13 For it is God who is actively at work within you, producing both the desire and the ability to accomplish His good purpose.

14 Carry out everything without complaining and disputing,

15 so that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God who are above reproach in the midst of a warped and corrupt generation, among whom you appear as luminaries in the world,

16 holding fast to the message of life, giving me reason for boasting on the day of Christ that I did not run my race pointlessly nor labor without result.

17 But even if my life is being poured out like a drink offering upon the sacrifice and priestly service of your faith, I am filled with joy, and I share that joy with all of you.

18 In the same manner, you also should be filled with joy and share that joy with me.

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 I am confident in the Lord Jesus that I will be able to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be encouraged when I receive information about your circumstances.

20 For I have no one else with a disposition like his who will genuinely be concerned about your welfare.

21 For they all pursue their own interests rather than the interests of Jesus Christ.

22 But you know Timothy’s tested character—how like a son serving alongside his father, he has labored with me in advancing the gospel.

23 I am hoping, therefore, to send him as soon as I gain clarity about my own situation,

24 though I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come to you before long.

25 However, I have concluded it necessary to send Epaphroditus back to you—my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, whom you sent as your representative and servant to address my needs,

26 since he has been deeply longing to see all of you and was distressed that you heard about his illness.

27 For indeed he was ill to the point of nearly dying, but God showed mercy to him—and not only to him but also to me—so that I would not experience one sorrow on top of another.

28 I am sending him back with special urgency, therefore, so that when you see him again you may experience joy, and I may have less anxiety.

29 Welcome him in the Lord with complete joy, and hold people like him in high honor,

30 because for the sake of Christ’s work he came close to death, risking his life to provide the service to me that you were unable to give personally.
