Philippians 1
1
Apostolic Greeting
1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants wholly devoted to Christ Jesus,
To all of God’s consecrated people in Christ Jesus who are living in Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
2 May grace or undeserved favor and peace be yours from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Pauline Thanksgiving
3 I express gratitude to my God every time I bring you to mind,
4 constantly in every petition I make on behalf of all of you, offering my petition with delight,
5 on account of your partnership in advancing the gospel from the very first day until this present moment,
6 holding firmly to this conviction: that He who initiated a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Christ Jesus.
7 It is entirely appropriate for me to have this perspective about all of you, because you hold a place in my heart, since all of you share with me in grace, both during my chains and in the vindication and establishment of the gospel.
8 For God serves as my witness of how deeply I long for all of you with the tender affections that belong to Christ Jesus.
Pauline Prayer
9 And this is what I pray: that your love would continue to abound more and more in genuine knowledge and complete insight,
10 enabling you to discern what is excellent, so that you would be pure and without offense for the day of Christ,
11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, resulting in glory and praise to God.
The Furtherance of the Gospel
12 Now I want you to understand, brothers and sisters, that the circumstances surrounding me have actually resulted in the gospel’s advancement,
13 with the result that my imprisonment for Christ has become widely known throughout the entire imperial guard and to everyone else,
14 and the majority of the brothers and sisters, having gained confidence in the Lord through my imprisonment, now speak God’s message with greater courage and without fear.
15 It is true that some are proclaiming Christ from motives of envy and contentiousness, while others do so from genuine goodwill.
16 These latter ones proclaim Christ from love, understanding that I have been positioned here for the defense of the gospel.
17 The former group announces Christ from selfish ambition rather than pure motives, supposing they can intensify my suffering in my chains.
18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every manner—whether from false motives or genuine ones—Christ is being proclaimed, and I find joy in this. Indeed, I will continue to find joy,
19 for I know that this situation will result in my deliverance through your intercession and the generous supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
20 in keeping with my eager expectation and confident hope that I will not be put to shame in any respect, but that with complete boldness—as has always been the case—Christ will be exalted in my body, whether through my life or through my death.
21 For in my case, living means Christ, and dying brings gain.
22 Yet if continuing to live in this physical body means productive labor for me, then I cannot say which I would prefer.
23 I find myself caught between these two possibilities, having the strong desire to depart this life and be with Christ, which would be vastly superior.
24 Yet remaining in this physical existence is more essential for your benefit.
25 Being persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue alongside all of you to promote your progress and joy in the faith,
26 so that your confident boasting in Christ Jesus may increase on account of me when I come to be with you again.
The Faith of the Gospel
27 Simply ensure that you conduct yourselves in a manner that reflects the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and observe you personally or remain absent, I may receive reports about your circumstances—that you are standing united in one spirit, striving together with one purpose for the faith that belongs to the gospel,
28 and not being intimidated in any way by those who oppose you. This serves as evidence of their coming destruction but of your salvation—and this comes from God.
29 For it has been graciously granted to you on Christ’s behalf not merely to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
30 as you undergo the same kind of struggle you witnessed in me and now hear that I continue to experience.
