James 1

Greeting

1 James, a servant wholly devoted to God and to the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes living in dispersion among the nations:

Greetings.

Trials of Faith

2 Count it as complete joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you are confronted with trials of many kinds,

3 because you recognize that the testing of your faith brings about steadfast endurance.

4 Let endurance be allowed to reach its full effect, so that you may become mature and whole, lacking nothing required for spiritual completeness.

5 If any of you is lacking wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6 But he must ask in faith, without inner hesitation, for the one who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed about by the wind.

7 Such a person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord,

8 being divided in allegiance and unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the brother who is in humble circumstances rejoice in the dignity God has given him,

10 and let the wealthy rejoice in being brought low, because he will pass away like a flower of the field.

11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flower falls, and its outward beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the wealthy person will fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, because once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.

Temptations to Sin

13 Let no one who is being tempted say, “I am being tempted by God,” for God is untouched by evil, and He Himself tempts no one.

14 Rather, each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own desire.

15 Then desire, after it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, when it reaches full maturity, brings forth death.

Good Giving and Perfect Gift from God

16 Do not be led astray, my beloved brothers and sisters.

17 Every good act of giving and every perfect gift comes down from above, descending from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.

18 In accordance with His own purpose, He brought us into life through the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of firstfruits among all He has created.

Hearing and Doing God’s Word

19 Be sure of this, my beloved brothers and sisters: Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,

20 for human anger does not bring about the righteousness God desires.

21 Therefore, put away all moral impurity and the excess of wickedness, and humbly receive the word that has been planted within you, which is able to save your souls.

22 But become people who put the word into practice, not merely those who listen and deceive themselves.

23 For if anyone hears the word but does not act on it, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

24 he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.

25 But the one who carefully looks into the perfect law that brings freedom, and continues in it, not as a forgetful hearer but as one who acts on what he has learned, this one will be blessed in what he does.

Pure and Undefiled Religion

26 If anyone claims to practise religion but does not keep his tongue under control, he is only deceiving himself; such religion has no real substance.

27 Religion that God the Father recognizes as pure and uncorrupted is shown in practical compassion for orphans and widows in their suffering, together with a life that remains untainted by the world.
