Mark 2

Jesus Heals a Paralytic
Matt. 9:1-8; Lk. 5:17-26
1 Now when He entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that He was at home. 2 And* many were gathered, so that there was no longer space, not even at the door; and He was speaking the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four of them.* 4 And when they could not bring him near to Him on account of the crowd, they removed the roof where He* was. And after digging an opening, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying. 5 And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, knowing in His spirit that they were reasoning this way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say ‘Arise, and take up your mat and walk’? 10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” —He said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house.” 12 And he arose and at once took up his mat and went out in full view of everyone, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
The Calling of Levi
Matt. 9:9-13; Lk. 5:27-32
13 And He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. 4 And as He passed by, He saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And He stood up and followed Him. 15 And it occurred that, as He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many and they were following Him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that He was eating with sinners and tax collectors,* were saying to His disciples, “Why does He eat with the tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The Question About Fasting
Matt. 9:14-17; Lk. 5:33-39
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “The friends of bridegroom * cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as * they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. * 20 But days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. 21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the piece pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a more severe tear results. * 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the wineskins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the wineskins. But new wine is put * into new wineskins.”
Plucking of Grain on a Sabbath
Matt. 12:1-8; Lk. 6:1-5
23 Now it happened that He was going through the cornfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way while plucking the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “See, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 So He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he had a need, and both he and those who were with him were hungry: 26 how he entered the house of God during the time of * Abiathar, the high priest, and ate the bread of the presentation, * which is not lawful for anyone * to eat except the priests, and he even gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, * and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath.”
