Mark 1

The Preaching of John the Baptist
Matt. 3:1-12; Lk. 3:1-9, 15-17; Jn. 1:19-28
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.*
2 As it is written in Isaiah the Prophet:
“Behold, I am sending My messenger before Your face,
who will prepare Your way,**
3 the voice of one calling aloud in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make His paths straight.’ ”*
4 John appeared, baptising in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were being baptised by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore* a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was preaching, saying, “One who is mightier than I is coming after me, of whom I am not fit to stoop down* and untie the strap of His sandals. 8 I baptised you with water, but He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism of Jesus
Matt. 3:1-12; Lk. 3:1-9, 15-17; Jn. 1:19-28
9 Now it took place in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John. 10 And immediately, as He was coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens being rent apart, and the Spirit like a dove, descending* on Him. 11 And a voice came from heaven,* “You are My Son, the beloved One; in You I am well pleased.”
The Temptation of Jesus
Μatt. 4:1-11; Lk. 4:1-13
12 And immediately, the Spirit sent Him out into the wilderness. 13 And He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And He was with the wild animals, but the angels were attending to Him.
The Beginning of Jesus’ Galilean Ministry
Matt. 4:12-17; Lk. 4:14-15
14 Now after John had been put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God* 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent and believe in the gospel.”
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
Matt. 4:18-22; Lk. 5:1-11
16 Now as He was passing by alongside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” * 18 And at once, they left their nets and followed Him. 19 And going on a little farther, He saw James, the son of Zebedee,* and John, his brother, and they were in the boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately, He summoned them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and went away after Him.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit from a Man
Lk. 4:31-37
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath, He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And they were struck with amazement at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately,* there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, “What have You to do with us, Jesus the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 Then after throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all astounded, so that they began to discuss among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even gives orders to the unclean spirits and they obey Him.” 28 And immediately, the report about Him spread everywhere throughout all the circumjacent region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many People
Matt. 8:14-17; Lk. 4:38-41
29 Now as soon as they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 But Simon’s mother-in-law was lying down, having a fever, and immediately they spoke to Him about her. 31 And drawing near to her, He raised her up by taking hold of her hand, and the fever left her,* and she began to serve them.
32 Now when evening came, after the sun had set, they began to bring to Him all those who were sick* and those who were demon-possessed.* 33 And the whole city had gathered together at the door. 34 And He healed many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons. And He was not allowing the demons to speak, because they knew Him.*
Jesus Preaches Throughout Galilee
Lk. 4:42-44
35 Now very early in the morning, while it was very dark, He arose, went out and departed to a deserted place, and there He was praying. 36 And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him, 37 and they found Him and said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” 38 And He said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, into the neighbouring towns, so that I may preach there also, for I have come out for this purpose.” 39 So He went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
The Cleansing of a Leper
Matt. 8:1-4; Lk. 5:12-16
40 Now a leper came to Him, entreating Him and falling on his knees, saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 And moved with compassion,* He stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be made clean.” 42 And at once, the leprosy departed from him,* and he was made clean. 43 And having sternly warned him, He sent him away at once* 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for an evidence to them.”
45 But he went out and began to proclaim it freely* and to disseminate the account widely, to the extent that He could no longer enter a city publicly, but He was staying outside in deserted places, yet they were coming to Him from every quarter.
