The Resurrection
Mk. 16:1-8; Lk. 24:1-12; Jn. 20:1-10
1 Now after the Sabbath,* at the break of dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat down on it. 3 Now his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And the guards were filled with dread from the fear of him and became like dead men. 5 But in response, the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are seeking Jesus, the One who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for He has been raised, just as He said. Come and see the place where He was lying.* 7 Now go quickly, tell His disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and behold, He is going before you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Behold, I have told you.” 8 And having departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to report to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Greetings!” And when they approached Him, they took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and report to My brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
The Report of the Guard
11 And as they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things which had taken place. 12 And after convening with the elders and consulting together, they gave a substantial sum of money* to the soldiers, 13 saying, “You must say ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him while we were sleeping.’ 14 And if this is heard by the governor, we will bribe him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this report has been circulated among the Jews to this day.
The Great Commission
Mk. 16:14-18; Lk 24.36-49; Jn. 20:19-23; Acts 1:6-8
16 So the eleven disciples journeyed to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had specified for them. 17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some expressed scepticism. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been granted to Me. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to keep everything I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days until the consummation of the age.” *
