And after convening with the elders and consulting together, they gave a substantial sum of money* to the soldiers, saying, “You must say ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him while we were sleeping.’ And if this is heard by the governor, we will bribe him and keep you out of trouble.” So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this report has been circulated among the Jews to this day.
