Matthew 10

10
Jesus Calls the Twelve Disciples
Mk. 3:13-19; Lk. 6:12-16
1 And calling His twelve disciples to Himself, He gave to them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
2 Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother; James, the son of Zebedee,* and John, his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus,* and Thaddaeus;* 4 Simon the Canaanite,** and Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him.
Jesus Commissioned the Twelve
Mk. 6:7-13; Lk. 9:1-6
5 These twelve Jesus sent out when He had commanded them, saying, “Do not go on the way to the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the household of Israel. 7 And as you are journeying, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven * has drawn near.’ 8 Heal those who are sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received; freely give. 9 Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a bag for the journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his sustenance. 11 And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay in that place until you depart. 12 And when you enter a home, give it your greeting. 13 And if the home is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whoever does not receive you, nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or that city, shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more endurable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.
The Apostles will be Persecuted
Mk. 13:9-13; Lk. 21:12-17
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. So, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 But beware of men,* for they will hand you over to courts, and in their synagogues, they will flog you. 18 And you will be brought before both governors and kings on account of Me, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they hand you over, do not be anxious about how or what you are to speak, for what you are to say will be given to you at that hour. * 20 For you are not the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21 “And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 22 And you will be hated by all because of My name. But the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved. 23 And when they persecute you in one city, flee to another; for truly, I say to you, you will certainly not have finished going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 “A disciple is not elevated above his teacher, nor a servant elevated above his master. 25 It is satisfactory for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the servant as his master. If they have called the head of a family Beelzebul, how much more the members of his family?
Fear Only God
Lk. 12:2-7
26 “Therefore, do not be afraid of them; for nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and nothing secret that will not be made known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach from the housetops. 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, but instead be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head have all been numbered. 31 Therefore, do not be afraid; you are esteemed more highly than many sparrows.
Acknowledging Christ Before Men
Lk. 12:8-9
32 “Therefore, everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge him before my Father who is in heaven. * 33 But whoever rejects Me before men, I also will reject him before My Father who is in heaven.
Jesus Comes to the Earth to Bring a Sword
Lk. 12.51-53; 14:26-27
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set at variance a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And the enemies of a man will be the members of his family. 37 The one who loves father or mother more highly than Me is not fit for Me, and the one who loves son or daughter more highly than Me is not fit for Me. * 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow Me is not fit for Me. 39 The one who finds his life will lose it, and * the one who loses his life on account of Me will find it.
Rewards
Matt. 9:41
40 “The one who accepts you accepts Me, and the one who accepts Me accepts the One who sent Me. 41 The one who accepts a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who accepts a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. * 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he will certainly not lose his reward.”
