Matthew 11
11
1 And it occurred that, when Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He proceeded from that place to teach and to preach in their cities.
Concerning John the Baptist
Lk. 7:18-35
2 Now when John heard in prison the works of Christ,* he sent word by his disciples* 3 and said to Him, “Are You the coming One, or shall we look for another?” 4 And in response, Jesus said to them, “Go and relate to John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel proclaimed to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended by Me.”
7 Now as these went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Behold, those who wear soft garments are in the houses of kings. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he concerning whom it is written:
‘Behold, I am sending My messenger before Your face,
who will prepare Your way before You.’ *
11 Truly, I say to you, there has not risen among those born of women one greater than John the Baptist, yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven * is greater than he. 12 But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, * and the violent are seizing it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you choose to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is going to come. 15 Whoever has ears, * let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to others, 17 saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not lament.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a Man—a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ Yet wisdom is proven right by her works.”
Pronouncement of Woes on the Unrepentant Cities
Lk. 10:13-15
20 Then He* began to denounce the cities in which the majority of His mighty works had taken place, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works that took place among you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless, I say to you, it will be more endurable for Tyre and for Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No. You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today. 24 Nevertheless, I say to you that it will be more endurable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Jesus Praises the Father
Lk. 10:21-22
25 At that time, Jesus said in response, “I give praise * to You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have kept secret these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, Father, for such was well-pleasing before You. 27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.
Invitation to All Who Toil
28 Come to Me, all those who toil and are being overburdened, and I will give rest to you. 29 Take My yoke on you and learn from Me, for I am mild and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is bearable and My burden is light.”
Notes
2 Two ancient Greek manuscripts replace the name Christ with Jesus
2 Some ancient manuscripts read he sent two of his disciples , likely as an effort to link the text with a parallel construction in Lk. 7:19
10 Quoted from Mal. 3:1
11 Greek of the heavens. So also v. 12
12 Or is advancing violently
15 Some ancient manuscripts insert the prepositional phrase to hear at this point
20 Some ancient manuscripts insert the name Jesus at this point, so that it reads: Then Jesus began to ….
25 Or I give thanks
