The First Disciples of Jesus
Matt. 4:18-22; Mk. 1:16-20
1 Now it occurred that, as the crowd was pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, He was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down, and began to teach the crowds from the boat. 4 And when He stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water, and lower your nets for a catch.” 5 But Simon replied and said, “Master, although we toiled throughout the whole night and caught nothing. But at Your word I will lower the nets.” 6 And after they did this, they enclosed a very large number of fish, and their nets began to tear. 7 And they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had gripped him and all those with him* at the catch of fish which they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. But Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear; from now on, you will be catching men.” * 11 And when they brought their boats to the land, they left everything and followed Him.
The Cleansing of a Leper
Matt. 8:1-4; Mk. 1:40-45
12 Now it occurred that, when He was in one of the cities, there was a man full of leprosy. And having seen Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 And having stretched out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” And immediately, the leprosy departed from him. 14 Then He commanded him, “Tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing just as Moses ordered, for an evidence to them.” *
Jesus’ Habitual Ministry and Prayer Life
15 But the report concerning Him was spreading even more, and large crowds would come together to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But He Himself would retreat quietly to the deserted places and pray.
The Healing of a Paralytic
Matt. 9:1-8; Mk. 2:1-12
17 And it occurred on one of those days, while He was teaching, that Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there—who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem—and the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal. 18 And behold, men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralysed, and they were seeking to bring him in and put him before Him. 19 But when they did not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him through the tiles with the mat into their midst, in front of Jesus. 20 And having seen their faith, He said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?” 22 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, “Why are you questioning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk?’ 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the one who was paralysed—“I say to you, ‘Arise, and after you have taken up your bed, go to your house.’ ” 25 And immediately, having stood up before them and taken up what he had been lying on, he left for his house, glorifying God. 26 And astonishment seized them all, and they began to glorify God. And they were filled with fear,* saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
The Calling of Levi
Matt. 9:9-13; Mk. 2:13-17
27 And after these things, He went out and saw a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 So, having left behind everything, he got up, and began to follow Him. 29 And Levi made a great banquet for Him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes began to grumble at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And in reply, Jesus said to them, “Those who have sound health have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Question Regarding Fasting
Matt. 9:14-17; Mk. 2:18-22
33 And they said to Him, “The disciples of John fast frequently and offer prayers, likewise also those of the Pharisees, but Yours are eating and drinking.” 34 So He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom * fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”
36 And He was also telling a parable to them: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, he will tear the new also, and the old will not match the patch from the new. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and it will be poured out and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine is to be put into new wineskins. * 39 And no one, having drunk the old, desires the new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ” *
Notes
9 One ancient Greek manuscript omits the phrase and all those with him
14 One ancient Greek manuscript inserts a parallel from Mk. 1:45–2:1 at this point. It reads thus: But he went out, and began to announce it freely and to spread abroad the account, so that He was no longer able to enter a city openly, but was out in deserted places, and they were coming to Him. And when He returned to Capernaum… .
10 Or people , as the term is understood in a generic sense
26 Or awe
34 Greek the sons of the bride-chamber
38 Some ancient manuscripts insert the expression and both are preserved at this point, in order to harmonise the text with Matt. 9:17
39 One ancient Greek manuscript omits the whole of v. 39 to synchronise the passage with other Synoptic parallels in Matt. 9:17; Mk. 2:22
