The Temptation of Jesus
Matt. 4:1-11; Mk. 1:12-13
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in* the deserted place 2 forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they were ended, He was hungry. 3 So the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak to this stone that it become bread.” 4 But Jesus responded to him, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on* bread alone.’ ” *
5 And he led Him up* and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “To You I will give all this authority and their glory, because to me it has been handed over, and to whomever I wish, I give it. 7 If You, then, will worship before me, all this will be Yours.” 8 But in reply, Jesus said to him,* “It is written:
‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and Him only you shall serve.’ ” *
9 And he brought Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, 10 for it is written:
‘‘He will give orders to His angels concerning you,
to protect you,’
11 and ‘On their hands they will carry you,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 But in reply, Jesus said to him, “It is said: ‘You shall not put to the test the Lord your God.’ ” *
13 And when the devil had ended every form of temptation, he withdrew from Him until a suitable time.
The Beginning of Jesus' Galilean Ministry
Matt. 4:12-17; Mk. 1:14-15
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report concerning Him went out into all the circumjacent region. 15 And He was teaching in their synagogues and was being glorified by all.
The Rejection of Jesus in Nazareth
Matt. 13:53-58; Mk. 6:1-6
16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and according to His custom on the day of the Sabbath,* He went into the synagogue and stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. *
He has sent Me to preach freedom to the captives
and restoration of sight to the blind,
to send those who are oppressed into freedom, *
19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” *
20 And having rolled up the scroll and given it back to the attendant, He sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were gazing intently at Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.” 22 And they were all bearing witness to Him and were wondering at the gracious words that were proceeding from His mouth. And they were saying, “Is this not the son of Joseph?” 23 And He said to them, “Certainly you will say to Me this parable: ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we heard has happened in Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” 24 And He said, “Truly, I say to you that no prophet is acceptable in his own hometown. 25 But in truth, I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, as a great famine came throughout the whole land. * 26 And to none of them was Elijah sent, except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a widow woman. * 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the days * of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.” * 28 And all in the synagogue were filled with anger when they heard these things. 29 And when they rose up, they drove Him out of the city and brought Him up to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, so as to throw Him down. 30 But passing through their midst, He went away.
The Healing of a Man with a Spirit of an Unclean Demon
Mk. 1:21-28
31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And He was teaching them on the Sabbath,* 32 and they were struck with amazement at His teaching, because His word was with authority.
33 Now in the synagogue, there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have You to do with us, Jesus the Nazarene?* Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God.” 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quite, and come out of him!” And after the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no injury. 36 And amazement came over all, and they were speaking to one another, saying, “What word is this? That with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And a report concerning Him was spreading into every place of the circumjacent region.
The Healing of Many
Matt. 8:14-17; Mk. 1:29-34
38 And having set out from the synagogue, He went into Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a high fever, and they appealed to Him on her behalf. 39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately, she got up and began to serve them.
40 Now as the sun was going down, all those who had sick individuals with various diseases brought them to Him. And laying His hands on each one of them, He healed them. 41 And demons also were coming out from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God.” But He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
Extension of Jesus’ Preaching Ministry
Mk. 1:35-39
42 Now when daylight came, He left and went to a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for Him; and they came to Him and attempted to prevent Him from leaving them. 43 But He said to them, “It is necessary for Me to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I was sent.” 44 And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
