The Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
Matt. 26:1-5, 14-16; Mk. 14:1-2, 10-11; Jn. 11:45-53
1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Judas Will Betray Jesus at the Instigation of Satan
3 Then Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went away and conversed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they rejoiced and consented to give him money. 6 And he agreed, and began to seek for a favourable time to betray Him to them in the absence of a crowd.
Jesus Celebrates the Passover with the Disciples
Μatt. 26:17-25; Mk. 14:12-21; Jn.13:21-30
7 Then came the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,* on which the Passover lamb must be sacrificed. 8 So He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us, in order that we may eat the Passover.” 9 And they said to Him, “Where do You want us to make preparations for it?” 10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man bearing a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house into which he enters. 11 And you will say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 And he will show you a large upper room, furnished. There make preparations.” 13 So they went and found it just as He had said to them; and they made preparations for the Passover.
The Lord’s Supper Instituted
Μatt. 26:26-30; Mk. 14:22-26: 1 Cor. 11:23-25
14 Now when the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have intensely desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I say to you that I will never eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken the cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I say to you, from now on, I will never drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken the bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body * which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood which is poured out for you. 21 But behold, the hand of him who is betraying Me is with Me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes according to what has been decreed, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves, who of them it might be who was about to do this.
Dispute About Who Seems to be the Greatest
24 And a dispute also occurred among them, as to which of them seemed to be the greatest. 25 So He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exert supremacy over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors'. 26 But not so with you. On the contrary, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But in your midst, I am like the one who serves.
28 “And you are the ones who have stayed constantly with Me in My trials, 29 and I appoint to you, just as my Father appointed to Me, a kingdom, 30 in order that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and may sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Peter’s Denial of Jesus Predicted
Μatt. 26:31-35; Mk. 14:27-31; Jn. 13:36-38
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you, in order that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have returned, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” 34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today, until you have denied three times that you know Me!”
Jesus Will Fulfil Scriptures
35 And He said to them, “When I sent you out without moneybag and knapsack and sandals, did you lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And the one who does not have a sword, let him sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was counted with the lawless.’ For indeed, what concerns Me has its fulfilment.” 38 So they said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
Μatt. 26:36-46; Mk. 14:32-42
39 And having departed, He went, according to His custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed Him. 40 And when He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you do not enter into temptation.” 41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw; and having knelt down, He began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, take away this cup from Me. However, not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 And an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He was praying more intently, and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.* 45 And when He rose from the prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sadness, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Μatt. 26:47-56: Mk. 14:43-50: Jn. 18:3-11
47 While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was going before them. And he came near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those around Him saw what was going to take place, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And a particular one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But in reply, Jesus said, “Desist! Enough of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to those who had come out against Him—the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 Day after day when I was with you in the temple, * you did not stretch out your hands against Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Betrays Jesus
Μatt. 26:57-58, 69-75; Mk. 14:53-54, 66-72; Jn. 18:12-18, 25-27
54 And having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him into* the house of the high priest. But Peter was following at a distance. 55 And when they had lit a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a certain female servant, having seen him sitting by the light and gazing intently at him, said, “This one also was with Him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him!” 58 And after a little while, another person saw him and was saying, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 Subsequently, after about one hour had elapsed, a certain other person was asserting emphatically, saying, “In truth, this one also was with Him, because he is also a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And after turning, the Lord looked at Peter. And Peter recalled the statement of the Lord, just as He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And after he went outside, he wept bitterly.
The Mocking and Beating of Jesus
Μatt. 26:67-68; Mk. 14:65
63 And the men who were holding Him tightly began to deride Him, as they beat Him, 64 and having blindfolded Him,* they kept questioning Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one that hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, while blaspheming Him.
Jesus Before the Council
Μatt. 26:59-66; Mk. 14:55-64; Jn. 18:19-24
66 And when it was day, the council of elders of the people gathered, both chief priests and scribes; and they took Him away to their Sanhedrin, 67 saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will certainly not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will certainly not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” And He said to them, “You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of a testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from His mouth.”

53 Or outer courts of the temple
54 Some ancient Greek manuscripts omit the coordinate independent clause and brought Him into
64 Some ancient manuscripts insert the imperfect construction they kept striking His face at this point, in order to synchronise the text with parallels in Matt. 26:67; Mk. 14:65
