The Poor Widow’s Offering
Matt. 12:41-44
1 And having looked up, He saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw a certain poor widow putting in two small coins. 3 Then He said, “Truly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all. 4 For all these put in their * gifts, out of their abundance; * but she, out of her poverty, put in all the means of livelihood which she had.”
Prediction of the Destruction of the Temple
Matt. 24:1-2; Mk. 13:1-2
5 And as some were speaking about the temple, how it was decorated with valuable stones and dedicated offerings, He said, 6 “In reference to * these things which you see—days will come in which there will not be left * stone upon stone, which will not be demolished.”
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Matt. 24:3-14; Mk. 13:3-13
7 And they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, when then will these things be, and what is the sign when these things are about to occur?” 8 And He said, “Watch out, lest you be misled. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and ‘The time has come near!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear about wars and instabilities, do not be stricken with panic, for these things must occur first; but the end will not be at once.”
10 Then He said to them,* “Nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in different places famines and plagues. There will be fearful portents, and also great signs from heaven. 12 “But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you over to the synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors because of My name. 13 This will turn out to be an occasion for you to witness. 14 Therefore, settle it in your minds not to premeditate how * to make a defence of yourselves, * 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all those who oppose you will not be able to resist or contradict. 16 And you will be delivered even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put to death some of you. 17 And you will be hated by all because of My name, 18 yet a hair of your head will never perish. 19 By your endurance, you will gain your souls.
Eschatological Discourse: Prediction of the Destruction of Jerusalem
Matt. 24:15-21; Mk. 13:14-19
20 “But when you see Jerusalem encircled by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those in the midst of it depart, and let those in the fields not enter it, 22 because these are days of vengeance, so that all the things that have been written may be fulfilled. 23 Alas for those women who are pregnant, * and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people, 24 and they will fall by the edge of the sword and be carried off as captives into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be subjugated by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Matt. 24:29-31; Mk. 13:24-27
25 “And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth, distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and its billowing, 26 men * fainting from fear and apprehension of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken, 27 and then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to occur, stand upright and lift your heads, because your redemption is coming near!”
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Matt. 24:32-35; Mk. 13:28-31
29 And He spoke a parable to them: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 As soon as they have sprouted, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also you, when you see these things occurring, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you that this generation will never pass away until all things have occurred. 33 Heaven and earth * will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
Eschatological Discourse: The Imperatives to Pay Attention to Oneself and to Keep Watching Always
34 “Pay attention to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day come upon you unexpectedly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all those who reside on the face of the whole earth. 36 Keep awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Jesus Teaches in the Temple
37 Now during the day, He was teaching in the temple,* but at night He was going out* and spending the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives. 38 And all the people would come at daybreak to Him in the temple to listen to Him.
