Jesus' Authority Questioned
Matt. 21:23-27; Mk. 11:27-33
1 Now it occurred that on one of the days, as He was teaching the people in the temple* and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came up with the elders 2 and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority? 3 And in reply, He said to them, “I also will ask you a question, and you must tell Me: 4 The baptism of John—did it originate from heaven, or from men?” * 5 And they reasoned it among themselves, saying, “If we say ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from. 8 Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Wicked Farmers
Matt. 21:33-46; Mk. 12:1-12
9 And He began to speak to the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to farmers and embarked on a journey for a considerable time. 10 And at the proper time, he sent a servant to the farmers, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But having scourged him, the farmers sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he proceeded to send another servant, but having scourged and treated disgracefully that one also, they sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he proceeded further to send a third, but having inflicted a wound on this one also, they threw him out. 13 So the master * of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will have respect for him.’ 14 But when the farmers saw him, they began to reason among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the master of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others.” And having heard this, they said, “May it never be!” 17 But gazing intently at them, He said, “What then is this that is written:
‘The stone which the builders * rejected,
this has become the cornerstone.’ *
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be shattered,
and the one on whom it falls—it will crush him into powder.” *
19 And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on Him at that same hour, but they were afraid of the people, for they knew that He had told this parable against them.
Paying Taxes to Caesar
Matt. 22:15-22; Mk. 12:13-17
20 So, having watched Him closely, they sent spies who pretended themselves to be righteous, so that they might catch Him in His word, in order that they might deliver Him to the rule* and the authority of the governor. 21 And they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach rightly, and do not show partiality,* but teach the way of God on the basis of truth. 22 Is it lawful for us to pay tribute* to Caesar or not?” 23 But observing their craftiness, He said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” And they said, “Caesar’s.” 25 So He said to them, “Well then, give to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, and to God the things that belong to God.” * 26 And they were not able to catch Him in His word before the people, and wondering at His answer, they became silent.
Concerning Marriage and the Resurrection
Matt. 22:23-33; Mk. 12:18-27
27 Now some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came and asked Him, 28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us if someone’s brother dies, having a wife, but he is childless, that his brother is to take the wife* and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers, and the first, having taken a wife, died childless. 30 And the second,* 31 and the third took her, and likewise also the seven: they left no children and died. 32 Eventually, the woman also died. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”
34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 On the contrary, those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither enter into marriage nor are given in marriage. 36 Indeed, they are not even able to die any longer, because they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses disclosed in the passage about the bush, when he calls the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 Now He is not God of the dead, but of the living. For to Him all live.” 39 And in reply, some of the scribes said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For they no longer ventured to ask Him anything.
Question about David’s Son
Matt. 22:41-46; Mk. 12:35-37
41 Now He said to them, “How can they assert that the Christ is to be David’s Son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 43 until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ 44 David, therefore, calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how is He his Son?”
Beware of the Scribes
Matt. 23:1-36; Mk. 12:38-40; Lk. 11:37-54
45 And while all the people were listening, He spoke to His disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk around in long robes, and who love greetings in the marketplaces, and the most honourable seats in the synagogues, and the places of honour at feasts, 47 who devour the houses of widows and, as an outward show, make lengthy prayers. These will receive the greater condemnation.”
