Zacchaeus Seeks Jesus
1 And having entered Jericho, He was passing through. 2 And there was a man called by the name of Zacchaeus; and he was a chief tax collector, and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see Jesus—who He was—but he was not able by reason of the crowd, because he was short in stature. 4 And he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore fig tree, so that he might see Him, because He was about to pass through that way. 5 And as He came to the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hasten and come down, for it is necessary for Me to stay at your house today.” 6 So he hastened and came down and welcomed Him, rejoicing. 7 And when they saw it, they were all murmuring, saying, “He entered to lodge with a sinful man.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I am repaying fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
The Parable of the Ten Minas
Matt. 25:14-30
11 Now as they were hearing these things, He proceeded further and told a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was about to appear immediately. 12 So He said, “A certain man of noble birth travelled to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself and to return. 13 And having called ten of his own servants, he gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Transact business until I come.’ 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 And it occurred that, upon his return and receiving the kingdom, he commanded these servants to whom he had given the money to be summoned to him, in order that he might know what they had gained by transacting business. 16 So the first arrived, saying, ‘Master, your mina has gained ten minas besides.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Your mina, Master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to this one also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 And another came, saying, ‘Master, behold your mina, which I had put away in a piece of cloth. 21 For I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man—you take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, ‘From your own mouth, I will judge you, evil servant. You knew that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and I, when I came, would have collected it with interest?’ 24 Then to those standing by, he said, ‘Take from him the mina and give it to the one who has the ten minas.” 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas!’ * 26 ‘I say to you that to everyone who has, more will be given; but from the one who does not have, even that which he has will be taken away. * 27 But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’ ” *
The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
Matt. 21:1-11; Mk. 11:1-11; Jn.12:12-19
28 Now having said these things, He travelled on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 And it occurred that, as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, to the hill called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, ‘Go into the village ahead of you,* in which, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; and untie it and bring it. 31 And if someone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you will say this: ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent departed and found it just as He had said to them. 33 And as they began to untie the colt, its owners said to them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’ 34 Then they said, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and having thrown their cloaks on the colt, they put Jesus on it. 36 And as He was going,* they were spreading out their cloaks on the road.
37 Now as He was already coming near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to rejoice and to praise God in a loud voice for all the marvellous works which they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King, the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 And some of the Pharisees among the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, censure Your disciples.” 40 And in reply, He said, “I say to you that if these keep silent, the stones will cry out!”
Jesus Weeps Over Jerusalem
41 And as He came near and saw the city, He wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you—even you—had known on this day the things pertaining to peace! But now they are concealed from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you, and your enemies will build a siege ramp against you, and encircle you, and confine you on every side. 44 And they will level you to the ground, you and your children within you; and they will not leave stone upon stone within you, because you did not recognise the appointed time of your visitation.”
The Cleansing of the Temple
Matt. 21:12-17; Mk. 11:15-19; Jn. 2:13-22
45 And having entered into the temple,* He began to expel those who were selling,* 46 saying to them, “It is written: ‘And My house will be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a hideout for robbers.”
47 And He was teaching every day in the temple, and the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men of the people were seeking to destroy Him. 48 But they did not find anything they could do, because all the people were hanging on His words as they listened.
