John 1

1
The Enfleshment of the Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 This One was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into existence through Him, and without Him, not a single thing came into existence that has come into existence. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.* 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This one came as a witness to testify concerning the Light, so that all might believe through Him. 8 That one was not the Light, but came to testify concerning the Light.
9 The true Light, who gives light to every man,* was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into existence through Him, but the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, but His own people did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man,* but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and resided among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified concerning Him and cried out, saying, “This One is He concerning whom I spoke, ‘The One who comes after me ranks before me, because He existed before me.’ ” 16 For from His fullness we have all received, and grace in place of grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the Only God,* the One who is at the side of the Father, that One has made Him known.
The Testimony of John the Baptist
Μt. 3:1-12; Mk. 1:2-8; Lk. 3:15-17
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to inquire of him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 So they inquired of him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he responded, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us,* so that we may give a response to those who sent us? What do you say concerning yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’* just as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 (Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.) 25 And they inquired of him* and said to him, “Why then are you baptising, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John responded to them, saying, “I baptise with water. In your midst stands One* whom you do not know, 27 the One who comes after me,* whose sandal strap I am not deserving to untie!” 28 These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptising.
Jesus, the Lamb of God
29 On the following day, he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, the One who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He concerning whom I said, ‘After me is coming a man who ranks before me, because He was before me.’ 31 And I myself did not know Him, but in order that He might be revealed to Israel, for this reason, I came baptising with water.” 32 Then John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 And I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptise with water, He said to me, 'The One* upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, He is the One who baptises with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this One is the Son* of God.
The First Disciples of Christ
35 On the following day, again, John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and looking at Jesus as He was walking by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”* 37 And the two disciples heard him saying this, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus, having turned and seen them following Him, said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which, when translated, means Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was approximately the tenth hour. 40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was among the duo who heard John and followed him. 41 This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated as Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Having looked at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
The Calling of Philip and Nathaniel
43 On the following day, He determined to go to Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, which is recognised as the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and also the prophets—Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards Him and remarked about him, “ Behold, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “From what place do You know me?” Jesus replied and said to him, “Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael responded to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus spoke in response and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will experience greater things than these!” 51 And He said to him, “Truly, truly I say to you all, * you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
