The Resurrection
Μatt. 28:1-10; Mk. 16:1-8; Jn. 20:1-10
1 Now on the first day of the week, at the break of dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone had been rolled away from the tomb; 3 and when they went inside, they did not find the body. 4 And it occurred that, while they were bewildered about this, behold, two men in resplendent clothing stood by them. 5 And as they were alarmed and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why are you seeking the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but He has been raised. Recall how He spoke to you, while He was still in Galilee, 7 stating that: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and rise again on the third day.’ ” 8 Then they recalled His words. 9 And having returned from the tomb,* they brought a report of all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James, and the others with them. They were telling these things to the apostles. 11 But these words appeared to them as a folly, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, and stooping, he saw only the linen wrappings; then he went away, wondering at what had happened.*
On the Road to Emmaus
Mk. 16:12-13
13 And behold, on that very day, two of them were travelling to a village about sixty stadia* from Jerusalem, Emmaus by name. 14 And they were conversing with one another concerning all these things that had taken place. 15 And it occurred that, as they were conversing and discussing, Jesus Himself also came near and began to journey with them, 16 but their eyes were restrained from recognising Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these matters that you are communicating with one another, while walking along?” And they stood still, looking gloomy. 18 And one of them, Cleopas by name, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, powerful in act and word in the presence of God and all the people, 20 and that* our chief priests and rulers delivered Him to the condemnation of death and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that He was the One who was going to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all these things, this is the third day* since these events* happened. 22 Furthermore, some women from among us astonished us. Having gone to the tomb early in the morning 23 and not finding His body, they came back saying they had seen even a vision of angels, who said that He was alive! 24 Then some of those with us went out to the tomb and found it just as the women had also said, but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, “O foolish and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
28 So they drew near to the village where they were going, and He acted as if He was going farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Stay with us, because it is towards evening and the day is already approaching its end.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 And it occurred that, while He was reclining at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and having broken it, He began to give it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognised Him, and He disappeared from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He was speaking with us on the road, as He was opening up* the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they got up that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and those with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has actually been raised, and He has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they began to rehearse what had happened on the road,* and how He had been recognised by them in the breaking of the bread.
Jesus’ Appearance to the Disciples and the Great Commission
Μatt. 28:16-20; Mk. 16:14-18; Jn. 20:19-23; Act 1:6-8
36 And while they were saying these things, He* himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace to you.” * 37 But they were scared and became alarmed, thinking they had seen a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do uncertainties arise within your hearts? 39 See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” 40 And having said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 And while they were still disbelieving for the joy, and were wondering, He said to them, “Do you have anything to eat here?” 42 So they offered Him a portion of broiled fish, 43 and He took it and ate it in their sight.
44 And He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything that is written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and Psalms concerning Me must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to comprehend the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ is to suffer and to rise from the dead * on the third day, 47 and repentance and the forgiveness of sins is to be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these occurrences. * 49 And behold, I am sending out the promise of My Father * upon you, but you stay in the city * until you are clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension
Mk. 16:19-20; Act 1:9-11
50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and having lifted up His hands, He blessed them. 51 And it occurred that, while He was blessing them, He was separated from them and was taken up into heaven.* 52 And having worshipped Him,* they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they were continually in the temple,* blessing God.*
