The First Disciples of Jesus
Matt. 4:18-22; Mk. 1:16-20
1 On one occasion, as the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear the word of God, He was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret—also known as the Sea of Galilee.
2 He saw two boats lying at the water's edge. The fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets after a night of fishing.
3 Jesus got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon Peter. He asked Simon to put out a little distance from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and began to teach the crowds from the boat.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch."
5 Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard throughout the entire night and caught nothing at all. But because You say so, I will let down the nets."
6 When they did this, they enclosed such a very large number of fish that their nets began to tear from the weight.
7 They signalled frantically to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that the boats began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this miraculous catch, he fell down at Jesus' knees in awe, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!"
9 Amazement had seized him and all those with him at the overwhelming catch of fish they had taken.
10 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners, were similarly amazed. But Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will be catching men for the kingdom of God."
11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything behind—their livelihood, their security—and followed Jesus.
The Cleansing of a Leper
Matt. 8:1-4; Mk. 1:40-45
12 While Jesus was in one of the cities, a man appeared who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You have the power to make me clean."
13 Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him—an act that would normally make someone ceremonially unclean. He said, "I am willing. Be made clean." Immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Jesus commanded him, "Tell no one about this. But go and show yourself to the priest for examination, and make an offering for your cleansing just as Moses commanded in the Law. This will serve as evidence to them of your healing."
Jesus' Habitual Ministry and Prayer Life
15 But the news about Jesus kept spreading even more widely, and large crowds would gather to hear Him teach and to be healed from their sicknesses.
16 Yet Jesus Himself would often withdraw quietly to deserted places to pray.
The Healing of a Paralytic
Matt. 9:1-8; Mk. 2:1-12
17 On one of those days, while Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem, to investigate Him. The power of the Lord was present for Jesus to perform healings.
18 Some men came carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralysed. They were trying to bring him inside and set him before Jesus.
19 When they could not find a way to bring him in because of the dense crowd, they went up on the roof. They removed the tiles and lowered him on his mat down through the opening into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith—demonstrated by their persistent effort—He said, "Man, your sins are forgiven you."
21 The scribes and Pharisees began to question and reason, saying, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who has the authority to forgive sins except God alone?"
22 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts and reasoning, answered them, "Why are you questioning these things in your hearts?
23 Which is easier to say: 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—He said to the paralysed man—"I say to you, get up, take up your mat, and go to your house."
25 Immediately the man stood up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.
26 Astonishment seized everyone present, and they began to glorify God. They were filled with awe, saying, "We have seen extraordinary and remarkable things today."
The Calling of Levi
Matt. 9:9-13; Mk. 2:13-17
27 After these events, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax collection booth. Jesus said to him, "Follow Me."
28 Levi left everything behind, got up immediately, and began to follow Jesus.
29 Levi held a great banquet for Jesus in his house. A large crowd of tax collectors and others were reclining at the table with them.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes began to complain to Jesus' disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? You are defiling yourselves."
31 Jesus answered them, "Those who are in good health have no need of a physician, but those who are sick do.
32 I have not come to call the righteous who think they have no need, but sinners to repentance."
Question Regarding Fasting
Matt. 9:14-17; Mk. 2:18-22
33 They said to Jesus, "The disciples of John the Baptist fast frequently and offer prayers regularly. Likewise, the disciples of the Pharisees do the same. But Your disciples are eating and drinking freely."
34 Jesus responded, "Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
35 But days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days when I am gone."
36 Jesus also told them a parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old garment. If he does, he will ruin the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the wineskins as it ferments. The wine will be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.
38 Instead, new wine must be put into fresh wineskins so both are preserved.
39 No one who has been drinking old wine immediately desires the new, for he says, 'The old is better.'"
