The Temptation of Jesus
Matt. 4:1-11; Mk. 1:12-13
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness
2 for forty days, where He was being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they came to an end, He was hungry and physically weak.
3 The devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
4 But Jesus answered him, "It is written in Scripture: 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"*
5 Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant of time.
6 The devil said to Him, "I will give You all this authority and glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all this will be Yours."
8 But Jesus answered him, "It is written:
'You shall worship the Lord your God,
and Him alone you shall serve.'"*
9 Then the devil brought Jesus to Jerusalem and set Him on the highest point of the temple. He said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here,
10 for it is written: 'He will command His angels concerning You,
to guard You,'
11 and 'On their hands they will bear You up,
so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.'"
12 Jesus answered him, "It has been said: 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"*
13 When the devil had finished every form and type of temptation, he withdrew from Jesus to wait for a more opportune time.
The Beginning of Jesus' Galilean Ministry
Matt. 4:12-17; Mk. 1:14-15
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. News and reports about Him spread throughout all the surrounding region.
15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and He was being praised and glorified by everyone.
The Rejection of Jesus in Nazareth
Matt. 13:53-58; Mk. 6:1-6
16 Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up as a child. According to His custom on the Sabbath day, He went into the synagogue and stood up to read from Scripture.
17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives,
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord's grace."*
20 He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down to teach. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed intently on Him, waiting to hear what He would say.
21 Jesus began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing—I am the One this prophecy speaks of."
22 All were bearing witness to Him and were marvelling at the gracious words that were coming from His mouth. Yet they were also saying with scepticism, "Is this not Joseph's son? How can He claim such things?"
23 Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote to Me this proverb: 'Physician, heal yourself.' You are thinking, 'Whatever we heard happened in Capernaum, do here in Your hometown as well.'"
24 He continued, "Truly, I tell you that no prophet is accepted and honoured in his own hometown.
25 But I tell you the truth: There were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months and a great famine came over the whole land.*
26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but only to a widow in Zarephath, in the region of Sidon—a Gentile woman.*
27 There were also many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian—another Gentile."*
28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with rage.
29 They rose up, drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw Him down the cliff to His death.
30 But passing through the midst of them supernaturally, He went on His way.
The Healing of a Man with a Spirit of an Unclean Demon
Mk. 1:21-28
31 Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. He was teaching the people on the Sabbath day,
32 and they were utterly astonished at His teaching, because His word carried divine authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice,
34 "Ha! What do You have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us before our time? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!"
35 Jesus rebuked the demon, commanding, "Be silent and come out of him!" After the demon had thrown the man down violently in their midst, it came out of him without doing him any lasting injury.
36 Amazement came over all the people, and they were saying to one another, "What kind of word is this? He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"
37 Reports about Jesus were spreading rapidly into every place in the surrounding region.
The Healing of Many
Matt. 8:14-17; Mk. 1:29-34
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went into Simon Peter's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they appealed to Jesus on her behalf.
39 Standing over her, Jesus rebuked the fever with authority, and it left her immediately. She got up at once and began to serve them—demonstrating her complete healing.
40 As the sun was setting and the Sabbath was ending, all those who had people sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He laid His hands on each one of them individually and healed them.
41 Demons also were coming out from many people, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus rebuked them sternly and would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
Extension of Jesus' Preaching Ministry
Mk. 1:35-39
42 When daylight came, Jesus left the house and went to a deserted place to pray. The crowds were looking for Him eagerly, and when they found Him, they tried to prevent Him from leaving them.
43 But He said to them, "It is necessary for Me to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to the other cities as well, because this is the purpose for which I was sent by the Father."
44 He continued preaching in the synagogues throughout Judea, proclaiming the good news of God's kingdom.
