The Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
Matt. 26:1-5, 14-16; Mk. 14:1-2, 10-11; Jn. 11:45-53
1 The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near.
2 The chief priests and the scribes were actively seeking how they might put Jesus to death, but they feared the reaction of the people who honoured Jesus.
Judas Will Betray Jesus at the Instigation of Satan
3 Then Satan himself entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve apostles.
4 Judas went away and held discussions with the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard about how he might betray Jesus to them.
5 They were delighted and agreed to pay him money for his treachery.
6 Judas consented to their proposal and began looking for a favourable opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present.
Jesus Celebrates the Passover with the Disciples
Matt. 26:17-25; Mk. 14:12-21; Jn. 13:21-30
7 Then came the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed according to the Law.
8 Jesus sent Peter and John with instructions, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal together."
9 They asked Him, "Where do You want us to make preparations?"
10 Jesus said to them, "Listen carefully: When you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into whatever house he enters.
11 Say to the owner of that house, 'The Teacher asks you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?'
12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there."
13 Peter and John departed and found everything exactly as Jesus had told them. They prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord's Supper Instituted
Matt. 26:26-30; Mk. 14:22-26; 1 Cor. 11:23-25
14 When the hour arrived, Jesus reclined at the table with the twelve apostles.
15 He said to them, "I have earnestly and intensely desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer.
16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds its fulfilment in the kingdom of God."
17 Jesus took the cup, gave thanks to God, and said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves.
18 For I tell you, from this moment forward, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes in its fullness."
19 Then Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body, which is given for you as a sacrifice. Do this in remembrance of Me."
20 In the same way, He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup represents the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
21 But understand this: The hand of the one who is betraying Me is with Me right now on this table.
22 The Son of Man will go to His death according to what has been predetermined and decreed by God. But woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 The disciples began discussing among themselves which one of them it might possibly be who would do such a thing.
Dispute About Who Seems to be the Greatest
24 A serious argument arose among the disciples concerning which one of them should be regarded as the most prominent.
25 Jesus addressed them, saying, “The rulers of the nations dominate their peoples, and those who exercise authority expect recognition as benefactors.
26 This must not define life among you. Rather, the one who is regarded as greatest must take the place of the least, and the one who governs must live as a servant.
27 Consider this: who is regarded as greater, the one reclining at the table or the one attending to him? Is it not the one reclining? Yet here I am among you, living as one who serves.
28 You are the ones who have remained with Me during My trials and hardships.
29 Just as My Father entrusted royal authority to Me, I now entrust a kingdom to you,
30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones exercising judgment over the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Peter’s Denial Foretold
Matt. 26:31–35; Mk. 14:27–31; Jn. 13:36–38
31 Jesus then said, “Simon, Simon, listen carefully. Satan has demanded permission to test all of you, shaking you as grain is shaken in a sieve.
32 But I have interceded for you in particular, that your faith may not collapse. When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
33 Peter responded, “Lord, I am prepared to go with You both to imprisonment and to death.”
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
Scripture Must Be Fulfilled
35 Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without money, supplies, or sandals, did you lack anything?” They answered, “Nothing.”
36 He said, “But now, whoever has money should take it, and likewise supplies. And whoever does not have a sword should sell his outer garment and acquire one.
37 For I tell you that what is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘He was numbered among the lawless.’ Everything written about Me is now approaching its completion.”
38 They said, “Lord, here are two swords.” He answered, “That is sufficient.”
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
Matt. 26:36–46; Mk. 14:32–42
39 Jesus departed and went, according to His established practice, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him.
40 When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw away, knelt down, and began to pray.
42 He said, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours, must be done.”
43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
44 Being in deep anguish, He prayed with greater intensity, and His sweat became like heavy drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them asleep, exhausted by sorrow.
46 He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation.”
The Arrest of Jesus
Matt. 26:47–56; Mk. 14:43–50; Jn. 18:3–11
47 While He was still speaking, a crowd appeared, led by Judas, one of the twelve. He approached Jesus to greet Him with a kiss.
48 Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When those around Jesus saw what was unfolding, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”
50 One of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 Jesus said, “Enough. Stop this.” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, officers of the temple guard, and elders who had come for Him, “Have you come with swords and clubs as though I were a violent criminal?
53 I was with you daily in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But this is your hour, when the authority of darkness is permitted to act.”
Peter Denies Jesus
Matt. 26:57–58, 69–75; Mk. 14:53–54, 66–72; Jn. 18:12–18, 25–27
54 They arrested Jesus and led Him away to the residence of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
55 When a fire had been lit in the centre of the courtyard and people sat down together, Peter sat among them.
56 A servant girl saw him seated by the fire, looked closely at him, and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But Peter denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 Shortly afterwards, another said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter replied, “Man, I am not.”
59 About an hour later another insisted strongly, “Certainly this man was also with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 Peter answered, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 The Lord turned and looked directly at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him, that before the rooster crowed he would deny Him three times.
62 And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten
Matt. 26:67–68; Mk. 14:65
63 The men guarding Jesus mocked Him and struck Him.
64 They blindfolded Him and demanded, “Prophesy. Who struck You?”
65 And they hurled many other blasphemous insults against Him.
Jesus Before the Council
Matt. 26:59–66; Mk. 14:55–64; Jn. 18:19–24
66 When daylight came, the elders of the people assembled, including the chief priests and scribes, and they brought Him before their council.
67 They said, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” He replied, “If I tell you, you will not believe,
68 and if I question you, you will not answer.
69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70 They all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” He answered, “You yourselves declare that I am.”
71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
