The Poor Widow's Offering
Matt. 12:41-44
1 Jesus looked up and observed the wealthy people depositing their generous gifts into the temple treasury.
2 He also noticed a certain poor widow placing two small copper coins into the offering—the smallest denomination of currency.
3 Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly, I tell you that this poor widow has given more than all the others combined.
4 For all these wealthy people gave their gifts out of their abundance and surplus. But she, out of her poverty and need, has given all the means of livelihood she possessed."
Prediction of the Destruction of the Temple
Matt. 24:1-2; Mk. 13:1-2
5 As some of the disciples were commenting on the temple—how it was adorned with beautiful stones and dedicated offerings—Jesus made a startling prediction.
6 He said, "Regarding these things you are admiring—the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another. Everything will be completely demolished."
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Matt. 24:3-14; Mk. 13:3-13
7 The disciples asked Him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? What will be the sign indicating when these events are about to occur?"
8 Jesus answered, "Be careful that you are not led astray. Many will come claiming My authority, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and 'The time of the end has drawn near!' Do not follow after them.
9 When you hear reports of wars and political upheavals, do not be terrified or panic-stricken. These things must take place first, but the end of the age will not come immediately."
10 Jesus continued His instruction: "Nation will rise up in conflict against nation, and kingdom will war against kingdom.
11 There will be massive earthquakes, and in various places famines and devastating plagues. There will be terrifying events and great miraculous signs appearing from heaven.
12 But before all these things happen, they will arrest you and persecute you severely. They will hand you over to the synagogues for punishment and throw you into prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of your association with My name.
13 This persecution will result in opportunities for you to bear witness and testify about Me.
14 Therefore, settle it firmly in your hearts not to worry in advance about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say.
15 For I will give you a mouth to speak and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you will be put to death for your faith.
17 You will be hated by everyone because of your identification with My name.
18 Yet not a single hair of your head will perish.
19 By your patient endurance and steadfast faithfulness, you will preserve your souls and gain eternal life."
Eschatological Discourse: Prediction of the Destruction of Jerusalem
Matt. 24:15-21; Mk. 13:14-19
20 Jesus continued, "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then understand that its desolation has come near.
21 At that time, let those in Judea flee immediately to the mountains. Let those inside the city depart quickly. Let those in the countryside not enter the city.
22 For these will be days of divine vengeance, when all the things written in Scripture will be fulfilled.
23 How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant and for those nursing infants in those days! There will be great distress upon the land and divine wrath against this people.
24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down and controlled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled and completed."
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Matt. 24:29-31; Mk. 13:24-27
25 Jesus also spoke about more distant events: “There will be observable signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars. On the earth, the nations will be overwhelmed with anxiety and confusion as they face the violent roaring and upheaval of the sea and its waves.
26 People will faint from terror and apprehension about what is coming upon the world. The powers of the heavens will be shaken and destabilised.
27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory to establish His kingdom.
28 When these things begin to take place, stand up straight and lift up your heads in confidence, because your redemption and deliverance is drawing near!"
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Matt. 24:32-35; Mk. 13:28-31
29 Jesus spoke a parable to them: "Observe the fig tree and all the other trees.
30 As soon as they sprout leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.
31 In the same way, when you see these prophesied events occurring, know with certainty that the kingdom of God is near.
32 Truly, I tell you that this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.
33 Heaven and earth will pass away and cease to exist, but My words will never pass away."
Eschatological Discourse: The Imperatives to Pay Attention to Oneself and to Keep Watching Always
34 Jesus warned, "Pay careful attention to yourselves. Be on guard lest your hearts become weighed down and dulled by dissipation, drunkenness, and the anxious worries of this life. If you are not vigilant, that day will come upon you suddenly and unexpectedly like a trap.
35 For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.
36 Stay awake at all times. Pray constantly that you may have strength to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man when He returns."
Jesus Teaches in the Temple
37 During the day, Jesus was teaching in the temple courts. But at night He would leave the city and spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives.
38 All the people would come to Him at daybreak in the temple to listen to His teaching.
