The Lord's Prayer
Matt. 6:9-15; 7:7-11
1 On one occasion, Jesus was praying at a certain location. When He concluded, one of His disciples requested, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John instructed his disciples."
2 He instructed them, "When you pray, say:
'Father, may Your name be revered as holy.
May Your kingdom come.
3 Provide us each day with our daily sustenance.
4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation.'"
5 Then He said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight, saying to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
6 because a friend of mine has arrived from a journey, and I have nothing to offer him.'
7 And that friend answering from inside responds, 'Do not trouble me. The door is already locked and my children are in bed with me. I cannot get up to give you anything.'
8 I tell you, even though he will not arise and provide anything because of friendship, yet because of your shameless persistence, he will get up and give you whatever you need.
9 Therefore, I tell you: Ask persistently and it will be given to you; seek diligently and you will discover; knock continually and the door will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks discovers; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 What father among you, if his son requests a fish, will give him a serpent instead of a fish?
12 Or if he requests an egg, will he give him a scorpion?
13 If you then, despite being sinful by nature, understand how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
Jesus and Beelzebul
Matt. 12:12-30; Mk. 3:20-27
14 Jesus was expelling a demon that rendered someone mute. When the demon departed, the previously mute person spoke, and the crowds marvelled.
15 But certain individuals declared, "He expels demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of demons."
16 Others, testing Him, persisted in demanding a miraculous sign from heaven.
17 But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom experiencing internal division becomes devastated, and a household divided against itself collapses.
18 If Satan also experiences internal division, how will his kingdom endure? For you claim I expel demons by Beelzebul.
19 But if I expel demons by Beelzebul, by whose power do your followers expel them? Therefore, they will serve as your judges.
20 However, if I expel demons by God's finger, then God's kingdom has arrived among you.
21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own estate, his possessions remain secure.
22 But when someone stronger than he attacks and overpowers him, he confiscates all the armour in which he trusted and distributes his plundered goods.
23 "Whoever does not align with Me opposes Me; and whoever does not gather with Me scatters.
The Return of the Unclean Spirit
Matt. 12:43-45
24 "When an unclean spirit departs from a person, it travels through waterless regions seeking rest but discovers none. Then it declares, 'I will return to my dwelling from which I departed.'
25 Upon arriving, it discovers the house swept clean and orderly.
26 Then it departs and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and after entering, they inhabit that person. Consequently, that person's final condition becomes worse than the initial state."
True Blessedness
27 As He was speaking these words, a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and declared to Him, "Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts that nursed You!"
28 But He replied, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear God's word and obey it!"
Seeking After a Sign
Matt. 12:38-42; Mk. 8:12
29 As the crowds increased, He began saying, "This generation is a wicked generation. It seeks a miraculous sign, but no sign will be provided to it except the sign of Jonah.
30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so too the Son of Man will be to this generation.
31 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment alongside the people of this generation and will condemn them, because she travelled from earth's distant regions to hear Solomon's wisdom; and consider this, someone infinitely greater than Solomon is here.
32 The people of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah's preaching; and consider this, someone infinitely greater than Jonah is here.
The Light of the Body
Matt. 5:15; 6:22-23
33 "No one, after lighting a lamp, conceals it in a cellar or under a basket, but places it on a lampstand, so that those who enter can perceive the light.
34 Your eye serves as the body's lamp. When your eye is healthy, your entire body is illuminated. But when it is diseased, your body is also darkened.
35 Therefore, be careful lest the light within you is actually darkness.
36 If then your whole body is illuminated, having no darkened part, it will be completely bright, as when a lamp illuminates you with its radiance."
Pronouncement of Woes on the Pharisees and Legal Experts
Matt. 23:1-36; Mk. 12:38-40; Lk. 20:45-47
37 When He finished speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine with him, and He entered and reclined at the table.
38 The Pharisee, observing this, was astonished that He did not perform the ceremonial washing before the meal.
39 But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the cup's and dish's exterior, but your interior is filled with greed and wickedness.
40 Foolish people! Did not the One who created the exterior also create the interior?
41 Rather, give as charity what is within; and observe, everything becomes clean for you.
42 "But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every garden herb, yet neglect justice and God's love. These you ought to have practised without neglecting those other matters.
43 Woe to you, Pharisees, because you desire the most prominent seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
44 Woe to you, because you resemble unmarked graves, and people who walk over them remain unaware.
45 Then one of the legal experts responded to Him, "Teacher, by saying these things, you insult us also."
46 He replied, "Woe to you also, legal experts, because you burden people with oppressive loads, yet you yourselves refuse to touch the burdens with even one finger.
47 Woe to you, because you construct monuments for the prophets, yet your ancestors murdered them.
48 Consequently, you serve as witnesses and approve of your ancestors' deeds, because they murdered them and you build their monuments.
49 Indeed, for this reason, God's Wisdom declared, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some they will kill and persecute,'
50 so that the blood of all prophets, shed from the world's foundation, may be charged against this generation,
51 from Abel's blood to Zechariah's blood, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation.
52 Woe to you, legal experts, you have removed the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you prevented those who were attempting to enter."
53 When He departed from there, the scribes and Pharisees became extremely hostile and interrogated Him about numerous matters,
54 plotting to trap Him in something He might say.
