New Mercies

Devo: I’ve spent quite a few nights sharing a hospital bed lately. I sleep on my side with my back pressed against the side rail to ensure I don’t fall out. I want to give my two and half year old, Charlie, as much room as he needs as he fitfully sleeps. But I also need to be close enough so my hand can rest on his cheek, just the way he likes it, while he sleeps.
Charlie has recently been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, which is a fancy way of saying thathe has a cancerous tumor in his abdomen. These are nights where sleep is found in fits and bursts, when the morning light streams through long before I am well-rested, or can even think of beginning a new day. These are hard days and long nights.
But just like these verses say, we call this to mind and have HOPE. Because of the Lord’s great mercy, this cancer, these sleepless nights, they don’t consume us. His mercies and compassions are new EVERY. MORNING. Every morning, when as the sun comes up and it’s hard to face whatever you’re facing - that broken relationship, that diagnosis, that demanding boss, the financial hardships. He is our portion. Simply, He is enough. He is not bothered by us, not annoyed at our requests or brokenness, and He will see us through.
When we cling to God in these places and the waves of life threaten to consume us again, we can remember the times He has been faithful, He has been our portion. We remember that His mercies were new every morning through that last trial and we can trust that He’ll be faithful to be our portion through whatever today brings.
Thankful: What are some seasons you’ve walked through where God has been your portion? How did you feel his mercy and compassion?
