She Reads Truth: Emmanuel

DAY 27 OF 28

The Humility of Christ

Reflection

When I think of Christ’s humility, I think about it as an event. God the Son, equal part of the Godhead, enjoying all the splendor and glory of God Himself, adding onto Himself the very nature of man. He didn’t leave his God-ness behind - but in taking on the full likeness and limits and weaknesses of man, He left behind the benefits of his God status.

Jesus was all-God and all-man; but the act of taking on that all-man part was His way of saying, “I come for the Father. I come for YOU.”

Christ’s humility was an event.
It was the moment He came naked into the world, the firstborn of a virgin and a carpenter, wrapped in swaddling clothes.
It was the hour He wrapped a towel around his hands and washed His disciples feet.
It was the purple robe and crown of thorns He wore as He stood trial on behalf of the human race.
And all of the events in between.

Christ’s humility was His whole life.

And His glory?

It was the great curtain of the tabernacle torn from top to bottom (yes, from Heaven to earth)! (Matthew 27:51)

And it was the grave clothes laying void of a body in an empty tomb! (John 20:5)

God the Son took on human form - He became poor and simple and unimpressive. He became a servant.

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
(Philippians 2:9-11, ESV)

Prayer

Jesus, you clothed yourself in humanity for us in the ultimate display of humility. You laid aside your crown to serve and save the likes of us, and then you picked up a cross and willingly gave your life for ours. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Amen.

Advent Action

Summarize the Christmas story in your own words. Write it down. Imagine yourself as a character in the story. Where are you? What do you see? How is Christ’s humility present even in your surroundings?
