Chasing Meaning

DAY 3 OF 6

Don't Waste Your Work

Solomon reflects on the futility of labor when it is done without God at the center. Many of us can relate to his words in Ecclesiastes 2:18: “I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun,” a haunting line that echoes the burnout and disillusionment many feel in their work. But Scripture offers a better way. In Genesis 2:15, even before the Fall, God placed Adam in the garden to “work it and keep it.” The Hebrew word used for work is the same word for worship, communicating how our faith is to be integrated into every area of life. Work was, and still is, a calling rooted in the image of a God who Himself works and creates.

Our culture often sees work as a burden or a necessary evil, and Ecclesiastes acknowledges that reality. Solomon voices the inner frustration we know too well: “What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? For all his days are full of sorrow... even in the night his heart does not rest.” We work hard, yet often feel unsatisfied. We try to justify ourselves through achievement and productivity, yet it leaves us restless. The burden grows when we forget that our worth does not come from what we do, but from who God says we are.

Yet Solomon arrives at a surprising conclusion: “There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also… is from the hand of God.” When God is at the center of our work, when we see our careers, tasks, and responsibilities as gifts from Him, our labor becomes a source of joy rather than anxiety. This truth is ultimately fulfilled in the Gospel. On the cross, Jesus completed the work of salvation, crying out, “It is finished.” The thorns of cursed labor became a crown on His head. Because of His work, we are freed from trying to prove ourselves through ours.

One powerful example of this was Emma Daniel Gray, a woman who spent twenty-four years cleaning the Oval Office. Every day before she left, she would place her hands on the President’s chair and pray for the leader of the free world. Emma understood that her work was not ordinary; it was sacred. She recognized that God had placed her exactly where she was for a purpose.

The same is true for each of us. Whether you are at a desk, in a classroom, on a job site, or at home raising children, God has placed you where you are to live on mission, on message, and in ministry. You are part of the Father’s business. As you reflect today, consider whether you view your work merely as a responsibility to endure or as a gift from God through which you can serve Him and others.

Application Questions:

  1. How does knowing that work existed in Eden before sin influence your view of your daily labor?
  2. Are there ways you’ve allowed your identity to be shaped more by your work than by your relationship with Christ?
  3. What parts of your job feel especially burdensome right now, and how might you bring those areas to God in prayer?
  4. How would your approach to work change if you saw it as a form of worship to God and service to others?
