Chasing Meaning

DAY 2 OF 6

The Quest for Pleasure

Solomon invites us into a raw and honest reflection on life. He had access to every form of earthly pleasure imaginable. He had wealth, success, achievement, influence, relationships, and comfort. He had it all. But in the end, he confessed that it was all meaningless without God.

Solomon deliberately pursued pleasure in search of satisfaction. He tested laughter, wine, achievement, wealth, and relationships, believing they might provide lasting fulfillment. If anyone could have found joy in the things of this world, it was Solomon. Yet the more he acquired, the more hollow it all became. The same temptation confronts us today. Whether it is success, comfort, relationships, possessions, or influence, we often look to created things to fill a longing that only God can satisfy.

In Ecclesiastes 2:11, Solomon reaches a sobering conclusion: “Then I considered all that my hands had done... and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind.” After achieving what most people only dream of attaining, he realized that none of it delivered on its promises. This is not pessimism; it is a truthful assessment of life apart from God. No matter how much we pursue or accomplish, there remains a deep void within us when we seek meaning solely in the things of this world.

Yet Ecclesiastes does not leave us without hope. In Ecclesiastes 3:11, Solomon writes, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart.” This verse helps explain why nothing in this world can fully satisfy our deepest longings. We were created for something beyond this life. We were created for God Himself. The good news of the gospel is that God has made a way for our restless hearts to find true rest. In Christ, who came from above the sun to live and die below it, we find the only pleasure that truly lasts. He took upon Himself our sin and offers us eternal joy in return.

God has placed eternity in every human heart. Take time today to consider where you are looking for joy. Are you resting your hopes in things that are temporary, or in the One who is eternal?

Application Questions:

  1. In what ways do you fall into the temptation of self-indulgence, even in subtle or “socially acceptable” ways?
  2. How does understanding that “eternity is in our hearts” change the way you approach pleasure and purpose?
  3. What does it practically look like for you to find joy in God rather than in His gifts?
  4. How can you help the next generation see through the lie that pleasure under the sun will satisfy?
