Day Three

Don't hate yourself. Let me reiterate from earlier in our time together: Your life has value, you are loved, and your life is so precious to God—He cares about you and loves you so much. He created you uniquely and with purpose! You are awesomely and wonderfully made (see Psalm 139:14)! Your worth is not determined by worldly beauty, success, what others say about you, or any other false “value markers” such as these. You need to hear this! You are made in God's image, and He loves what He sees: you. Your worth and value are found in God alone. Value is determined based on the price that people are willing to pay for something—if it's valuable, people will pay a hefty price. The Father determined your value and worth once for all when He gave up the most valuable of all eternity to have you, by sending His one and only Son to die, for your sins, in your place, on a cross, for you. That's your value! And nothing you do or have ever done can change your God-determined value and worth. That shows how valuable you are in His eyes. That’s real love (see 1 John 4:10).

So now that you understand that I’m not devaluing your life or endorsing self-hatred by any means, let me keep explaining why the love of self must die. To love yourself, from a fleshly standpoint, is to be filled with pride and arrogance. Don’t you find it odd that some of the people who say that they struggle to “love themselves” talk about themselves a lot? If they didn’t love themselves, then why do they talk about themselves so much?

What if you are too distracted by trying to love yourself, that you’re missing out on a relationship with Love? What if, instead, you decide to take your eyes off yourself and put them on Love, who is God Himself? If your eyes are on Love (God), and you’re seeing everything through His eyes (which is love), then there is no way you could look at yourself with hatred or with arrogance. You’ll see yourself the way that God sees you: someone He loves who was wonderfully made in His image.
