“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23, AMP)
The human heart is one of the most unique and powerful forces in life. Often, the heart and the mind can be pulling in different directions, yet somehow the heart carries tremendous influence. Even when logic says one thing, the heart can lead us another way. And once our hearts become set on something, it becomes very difficult for anything or anyone to convince us otherwise. The heart wants what it wants.
That is why Scripture gives such a direct command: guard your heart above everything else.
The heart is not just emotional language in the Bible. It represents the core of who we are…our beliefs, our desires, our motives, and our direction. What takes root in your heart will eventually show up in your life.
Salvation itself begins in the heart.
“Because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, NLT)
The greatest commandment also begins there. “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”(Mark 12:30, NLT)
And when it comes to navigating life, Scripture calls us to anchor our trust there as well. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, NLT)
Faith, love, and trust all begin in the heart.
But the condition of our heart also affects our emotional and even physical well-being.
“A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.” (Proverbs 14:30, NLT)
“A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.”(Proverbs 15:13, NLT)
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” (Proverbs 17:22, NLT)
What lives in your heart will eventually flow out into your life.
Peace strengthens you. Joy energizes you. Jealousy corrodes you. Bitterness drains you.
So the question becomes: how do we guard our hearts?
We invite God to shape it.
David prayed a prayer that every believer should carry in their spirit:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10, NLT)
This prayer recognizes something powerful…we cannot purify our own hearts by willpower alone. We need God to work within us.
Ask Him to remove what does not belong there. Ask Him to replace bitterness with peace. Ask Him to restore joy where disappointment tried to settle in. Ask Him to renew your spirit when life has tried to wear you down.
When God has your heart, everything else begins to align…your thoughts, your decisions, your words, and your direction.
Guard your heart. Fill it with truth.
Anchor it in faith. And continually invite God to create in you a clean heart and a steadfast spirit.
