In the World, Not of It
Daniel was taken from everything familiar and dropped into the most powerful, and pagan, empire on earth. He didn't choose Babylon. But he chose how to live there.
What makes Daniel's story remarkable for those of us in the marketplace is the combination of two things that rarely go together: he was distinct and he was engaged. He refused the king's food, a quiet, principled act of faithfulness that set him apart. But he also learned the language and literature of Babylon, served with excellence in its courts, and was trusted by its rulers. He didn't withdraw into a holy huddle. He showed up, fully, in the world as it was.
Jesus prayed for exactly this in John 17. He didn't ask the Father to take his followers out of the world, he asked for them to be protected as they were sent into it. The world of business is, in many ways, the front line of that sending. Every day you're around people who would never set foot in a church. You can reach them in ways a pastor often can't.
This is not a burden! It is an extraordinary opportunity! The marketplace puts you in the path of people, problems, and systems that God cares deeply about. You are not just there to earn a living. You are there as an agent of God's common grace, the goodness and kindness he shows to all people, whether they believe in him or not.
Being distinctly Christian doesn't have to mean imposing your faith loudly or making colleagues uncomfortable. It means bringing a different quality of integrity, care, patience, and hope into every interaction, being the kind of person who makes others wonder what makes you different.
Reflection Questions
- Daniel was intentional about setting himself apart in Babylon while still serving within it. In your workplace, what marks you as genuinely different, and are those differences rooted in conviction or merely comfort?
- How do you maintain your Christian identity in a secular environment without either hiding your faith or weaponising it?
- What injustice, inefficiency, or brokenness in your industry makes you angry enough to want to do something about it? Could that be a God-given prompt to bring something into alignment with his will?
Prayer
Father, thank you for placing me exactly where I am, not by accident, but by design. Like Daniel, help me to be fully present in my "Babylon" without being absorbed or influenced by it. Give me the courage to be distinct without being disconnected from reality, and the wisdom to engage the world around me with grace and truth. Show me today how I can be a carrier of your goodness to someone who may never set foot in a church. Use me as your agent of common grace. Amen.
