Doing Work Differently

DAY 2 OF 10

Why You Work

Before there was a marketplace, there was a mandate.

In the very first chapter of the Bible, before sin entered the world, before the church existed, before anyone had a career, God commissioned human beings to work. He told them to be fruitful and multiply, and to subdue the earth. Theologians call this the “Cultural Mandate”.

Scholar Nancy Pearcey unpacks it this way: the first phrase, "be fruitful and multiply", means developing the social world: building families, schools, cities, governments, and laws. The second phrase, "subdue the earth", means harnessing the natural world: planting crops, building bridges, designing computers, composing music. Our original purpose, given to us before the Fall, was to create cultures and build civilisations.

This means your work is not a consequence of sin! It is not something to be endured until you can get to the "real" spiritual stuff. Work is part of God's original design for human dignity and flourishing, and it matters deeply to him.

God has a purpose not just for individuals and the church, but for every sphere of society, including business. Understanding how your industry and your role contribute to a thriving society is not a distraction from honouring God, it is honouring God.

Colossians 3:23 ties it together: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Your daily tasks, the emails, the meetings, the difficult conversations, the careful craft, are all acts of worship when offered to God. The "why" behind your work transforms the "what."

When you have a clear and God-shaped reason for why you are in the marketplace, your work becomes a calling, not just a career.

Reflection Questions

  1. If someone asked you today, "Why do you work?", what would you honestly say? How does that answer compare to the biblical picture in Genesis?
  2. How does understanding work as part of God's original creation (not a result of the Fall) change the way you feel about your daily tasks?
  3. Does your daily calendar reflect your deepest vision and purpose? Who helps keep you accountable to that?

Prayer

Lord God, you worked, you created, you shaped, you made. And you made me in your image to do the same. Please help me to see my work not as a necessary evil or a means to an end, but as a genuine calling and an act of worship. Give me a clear and compelling "why" that goes beyond a pay cheque and has a sense of purpose rooted in your Kingdom and your love for the world. May I work today with all my heart, as if working for you… because I am.
Amen.
