Proverbs - Episode 1Sample

In the first three verses of Proverbs chapter one, King Solomon lays out the purpose of the book:
- To teach you wisdom
- To teach you self-control (discipline, moderation, patience, and inner strength)
- To help you understand parables (sayings with deep meanings)
- To teach you righteous living
- To teach you honesty
- To teach you how to be fair in your dealings with others.
In essence, studying the book of Proverbs will shape your character. Even if you were not raised in an environment where wisdom is valued, Solomon makes it clear that if you commit to learning the principles of the book of Proverbs and embracing its spirit, you will become wise. The true evidence of wisdom is not in words, but in results. Wisdom shows up in your decisions, outcomes, work, character, family, and relationships. It is not a “nice-to-have” virtue; it is essential for living a successful life.
The chapter also reveals that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of divine knowledge. To fear the Lord means to honour God and obey His commands. It is the starting point of true understanding. If you desire insight beyond human reasoning, like Joseph interpreting Pharaoh’s dream and leading Egypt, the greatest civilisation of that time, or Daniel revealing the details of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream without being told, as well as serving as a senior official to four different kings, then a life of reverence and obedience to God is non-negotiable.
Another key lesson is the importance of obeying parental instruction. As children grow into young adults, there is often a tendency to dismiss their parents, especially in a rapidly changing world shaped by new culture and technology. But wisdom is timeless. It may not tell you what is trending, but it will guide your choices. It may not tell you which device to use, but it will shape who you listen to and who influences your life. Your parents have lived in this world longer than you have. They may have made mistakes and wrong choices, but even that produces the wisdom that comes from experience. The Bible also instructs us to listen to our parents to gain wisdom.
