Hezekiah's Audacity: Turning your face to the wall
The account of King Hezekiah in Isaiah 38 stands as one of the most breathtaking demonstrations of the believer's audacity in the face of an impossible medical verdict. Hezekiah was ill, and not merely ill. The prophet Isaiah came to him with a specific, God-spoken word: "Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live" (Isaiah 38:1). This was not a vague warning. It was a direct divine pronouncement. Every natural indication was that the case was closed.
But Hezekiah refused to accept this as the final word. Isaiah 38:2 records: "Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the LORD." He turned to the wall, away from the prophet, away from the medical reality, and he brought his case directly before God. This is audacity. This is the believer refusing to treat any word as more final than God's personal history of mercy and faithfulness. Hezekiah prayed, wept, and reminded God of his walk of integrity before Him.
The response was immediate and extraordinary. Before Isaiah had even left the middle court of the city, God stopped him and sent him back with a new message: "Thus saith the LORD... I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years" (Isaiah 38:5). God reversed the verdict. He extended Hezekiah's life by fifteen years because of prayer rooted in relationship and history with God.
What is the terminal pronouncement in your life?
What has the world's report declared as final, closed, or hopeless?
Hezekiah's story is in your Bible not as a curiosity about ancient history but as a comfort from Scripture, a paraclesis, standing alongside you, declaring: God can reverse the verdict. Turn your face to the wall. Pray. He is the same God who reversed Hezekiah's verdict, and He has not changed.
Amen!
Action Point: If there is a verdict, medical, financial, relational, or otherwise, that has been declared over your life or the life of someone you love, refuse to treat it as final. Follow Hezekiah's example: turn your face toward God, pray with passion, and present your case before Him. Trust that He hears and that He can reverse what men have declared.
