When God "CHANGES HIS MIND": Prayer and Divine Responsiveness
One of the most profound theological implications of prayer is found in God's interaction with Moses on Mount Sinai. When Israel made the golden calf, God declared His intention to destroy the entire nation and start again with Moses (Exodus 32:10). Moses interceded. And God "repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people" (Exodus 32:14). A divine declaration was reversed by the prayer of one man. This is not a small thing. It raises a question that goes to the heart of the theology of prayer: Does God genuinely respond to human prayer in ways that alter His declared intentions?
The answer of Scripture is yes, and it is meant to be encouraging, not alarming. It does not undermine God's sovereignty; it expresses one of sovereignty's most remarkable features: a God so great that He can choose to be genuinely responsive to the prayers of His people without compromising His ultimate purposes. Abraham bargained from fifty down to ten righteous people before the destruction of Sodom. Hezekiah prayed, and fifteen years were added to his life. The persistent widow received the justice she had been denied. These are not exceptions or anomalies; they are the recurring testimony of a God who takes seriously the prayers of those who turn to Him.
This is deeply relevant to how you approach prayer. If you come to prayer with the assumption that everything is fixed and your prayers are merely a religious exercise, you will pray with zero energy because you expect zero effect. But if you come with the understanding that prayer genuinely moves things, that your voice in God's hearing has real weight, that your tears genuinely matter, that your intercession can alter the course of events for people you love, prayer becomes the most urgent activity in your life.
You have more influence in the spirit realm through prayer than you may have been taught to believe. Exercise it.
Action Point: Is there a situation in your life or in the life of someone you love that looks fixed and immovable? Pray over it today with the confidence of Abraham negotiating before God, or Hezekiah turning his face to the wall. The God who responded to them is the same God who hears you. Bring it earnestly and with expectation.
