"Criminals and Kings" is one of the first songs I wrote for this album. I was searching for answers in the Bible about my purpose, both personally and professionally and I was drawn to the stories about King David. The book of Samuel calls David a "man after God's own heart" and I wanted to know what earned him that distinction. No doubt, King David was one of the most celebrated characters in the Bible for his leadership, service, and relationship with God. But his sins were many, and they were horrific. How can a man who commits adultery and murder be a man after God's own heart? Ultimately, David had absolute faith in God and loved Him with all his heart. He made mistakes because even as a celebrated, powerful king, he was human and flawed.
This song is about the struggle between what God calls us to be (kings), and what our human nature wants us to be (criminals). I want to be a man after God's own heart and fulfill my call to be a king on this earth, but it is so frustrating when my criminal nature takes over and brings me down. I'm thankful that God loves me in spite of my failures and that if His forgiveness covers David's sins, it erases mine too.
