Reflection
The book of Acts does not end with a victory parade. It ends with faithfulness.
After shipwreck, exhaustion and danger, Paul finds himself on the island of Malta. He is not treated as a hero, but as a survivor. And yet, even here, Paul serves. He gathers firewood. He helps. He stays present. Ministry does not stop because circumstances are inconvenient.
Then comes another moment of misunderstanding. A snake bites Paul, and people assume this must be judgement. When he survives, they swing to the opposite extreme and think he must be a god.
Paul accepts neither label.
He prays for the sick and sees healing. What looks like a delay in the main plot line becomes an opportunity. God is still at work, even when plans fall apart. Even when the journey takes an unexpected turn.
Eventually, Paul reaches Rome. This has been the promise hanging over the second half of Acts. But when he arrives, it is not as a free man. He is under house arrest, chained, limited, watched. And yet Luke tells us something extraordinary. Paul welcomes all who come to see him. He teaches. He explains. He proclaims the kingdom of God with boldness and without hindrance.
This is how Acts ends. There is no tidy resolution. No bow-wrapped conclusion. It simply ends with the gospel advancing.
Acts 28 reminds us that God’s purposes have not stopped. The book ends, but the mission does not. Acts is not just history ‒ it is a handover. The story now continues through us.
Challenge
Today, look for an opportunity to welcome people like Paul. Is there someone you could invite for a coffee or meal. Before you meet, think about what you might say if they ask about your faith.
Prayer
God, thank you that your work continues.
Use my life, wherever I am, to make Jesus known.
Amen.
